My ER was yesterday & they got 18 eggs. Today we got the call from the IVF Coordinator saying that none of the 18 eggs fertilized because they were not mature enough. I am devastated and so confused by all of this. We were so convinced this would work and this would be the one.
The IVF Coordinator mentioned that I might have PCO (which I always thought was PCOS), but we have to meet with the RE to get the full details. I did some brief research on PCOS and don't have a single symptom. I've had text book cycles since I was 11, I'm overweight now b/c of all the fertility drugs but I'm usually a normal weight & size, I ovulate every month, I've had God knows how many ultrasounds & no one has ever said anything about cysts, all my blood work is perfect - I just don't get it. I guess I could be insulin resistant, I've never been tested for that, but could that prevent me from producing mature eggs? And why didn't they catch this before we went through the IUIs and IVF?
She said they could put me in the September cycle with new stim meds to help ensure mature eggs, but I don't know if I'm up for it. DH deploys at the first of October and we would probably get the "results" of IVF #2 only days before he left. If IVF #2 fails, I don't know if I could take it. Plus my body has been through so much, I don't know if it's fair to me to start back so quickly. They can freeze his sperm before he leaves, but I can't imagine going through this without him. Of course we can wait until he gets back, but he may not come back - it is a war.
I'm just so confused and we're both hurting. Any PCOS info or stories would be very helpful. And any stories about immature eggs would be helpful too. Thanks.
Re: No Fertilized Eggs - Devastated & Confused
Unexplained Infertility
After two Clomid cycles, three injectable IUI cycles, two IVFs, two miscarriages, and one lap surgery, IVF #2 has brought us our little boy!
TTC #2
After months of being postponed or cancelled, FET #1.3 (Natural FET) brought us twin girls!
I am sorry that I don't have any experience or stories to share with you regarding your post. I just wanted to say Good Luck and I am so sorry you are going through this.
Thanks to you and your husband for all the bravery and fighting for us!!!
I don't have any info on PCO or immature eggs. I just wanted to say how sorry I am for you for this devastating news. And to have your DH going off to war on top of it all. I can't imagine.
Take care of yourself and good luck with what ever you decide.
IVF#1 gave us a BFP on 8/24/09, DD born May 2010
Surprise, natural BFP July 2012 ended in miscarriage 9/4/12 at 10w4d
FET#1 January 2013
I'm so sorry this is happening to you - how devastating. ((HUGS))
I have polycysric ovaries and some symptoms of PCOS, but have never been outright diagnosed with the syndrome (no weight problems, I ovulate on my own, etc.). They got 40 eggs from me (36 mature) during my IVF cycle, which I've been told by 2 other REs, is way too many. With PCOS the trick is careful stimming and tweaking to get the right quantity and quality.
If you're not sure what to do next, go get a second opinion. I did these past 2 weeks and it has given me my hope back (details in blog).
Best of luck to you!
I am so sorry. Your cycle sounds almost identical to my first IVF. I had 19eggs retrieved and none of them were mature. They matured overnight but only 3 fertilized and I had to even wait to do a 6 day transfer with the only one OK blast left. That led to BFN. IVF #2 they changed the medication to a lessor dose so they would get less but more quality. They only retrieved 1 egg which was not mature and didn't mature overnight. I am completely devastated. More about it in my blog.
My RE told me the same thing about reacting like PCOS but I don't have it. She suggested Metformin because it could not hurt but it may possibly help. I am still on the fence about using something else but considering it.
I would definately give it some thought before moving right into another cycle. It was really hard to think of not just getting done now, but if the same happens again it could really be devastating. I wish you luck in whatever you do.
Thank you everyone for the hugs and well wishes. They truly do make me feel better. I have thought about getting a 2nd opinion. But despite the fact that we live in a pretty large city, there are only two REs in town. However there are REs in cities within 2 hours of us that I could consult. I just want to hurry up and talk to the RE to find out exactly what went wrong.
Oh, and a big thank you for the well wishes for DH. Thanks again!
After two losses, third time was a charm.

If Atlanta is one of the places you could get a second opinion, you are welcome to stay with us so you don't have to drive both ways in the same day.
I am really sorry.
I have PCO - it is when you only have it in your ovaries - no other symptoms. In my first 2 IVF cycles, I had very low maturity rates because they didn't let me go long enough before triggering and I got too many eggs too fast. It was a disaster both times. There are specialists out there that work specifically with PCO. I would probably want to meet with your RE and go through the specifics. You don't want him/her to just "think" you have PCO. I would want concrete information on why they think this (is it just immaturity) and how they are planning to change your protocol. How many days did you stim this last time?
I hate to say I'm a PCO expert, but I have definitely been through the ringer on PCO. If you have any questions, please feel free to page me.
Good luck!
