High-Risk Pregnancy

GD diet plan

So, I found out on Tuesday that I have GD =(

I have had to test my levels since Tuesday and they have been within the limits.  I just met with the dietrician and when I left I cried my eyes out!  She suggested an 1800 calorie diet plan!  I am pregnant with twins!!  I feel like they will not be getting all that they need.  She told me I was to drink water only (fine) and that I can only eat breakfast, lunch, dinner, and a snack at night.  I mean it's not a lot of food and I always feel hungry even before this diet.  I am concerned because a non-preg diet is 2000 calories and I am creating two humans and can only eat 1800?  I feel like this plan is just setting me up to fail!  I could deal with staying away from sweets and watching carbs- which is probably what I will end up doing.

Also, I am well within the suggested weight gain.  I felt like such a fattie... granted I am pregnant but you know.

Any comments about this plan?  I think I am going to call my doctor and voice my opinions...

Well I'm off to eat my grilled cheese with one slice of low fat cheese and my 2 walnuts!  Eat up babies!! Sad

Re: GD diet plan

  • **********Please keep in mind that I love these babies and will do what it takes, it just seems too strict and not enough nourishment...  TIA!

  • That does sound a bit strange if you are at a normal weight.  My nutritionist put me on a 2000 calorie diet but I am supposed to eat 6 times a day.  I eat breakfast and then 2 hours later a small snack.  Then lunch and another small snack.  Then dinner and a late night snack.  I couldn't imagine only eating 3 meals a day and I'm only having one baby.  I would ask your doctor about that because it does seem low.  Let her know that you get hungry between meals.  I couldn't imagine that anyone would want a pregnant woman to go hungry (especially with 2 babies).

  • Uh yeah, I have GD and my dietician doesn't give a flip about calories. She wanted me to eat as much fat as I could. I would call your doc ASAP. Even if you are overweight (which you aren't) you would need more than 1800 calories with twins. That doesn't seem right at all.

  • I was told it had nothing to do with calories and that I needed to cut out the processed carbs/sugars.  I've been encouraged to keep some dairy (for calcium) and to focus on whole fruits/veg and meats/proteins to satisfy nutritional requirements.

They recommended eating cheese/nuts/other protein sources with my fruits/carbs and this helps a lot with keeping me satisfied.

I think the 1800 calorie diet sounds awfully restrictive.  If you are having twins, you should probably talk to your ob about your necessary calorie intake and get him/her to help you make adjustments as needed.

  • Hmm that seems wierd.  My diet plans has no calorie requirements and I actually have to eat MORE than I was eating before to regulate my sugars and keep them up for the whole day.  Just not many carbs or sugars, but there is a ton of protein and fat!

  • I have no calorie restrictions just carbs. In fact I was told by my nutrtionist this week that I was in trouble for not eating my snacks in between my meals bc thats where the extra calories come from for the baby. (She even threatened to put me on disability bc of it). So I thinks its pretty serious. I would call your Dr. and demand to see a new nutritionist. I would also do some research and find out what the typical guidelines are for twin pregnancies w/GD. I wish you luck and please keep us posted.

  • I agree that that sounds restrictive. My dietician also doesn't care about calories at all. She has a minimum and maximum amount of carbs I need to eat, and that's about it. I lost two pounds in the first two weeks of the GD diet, and my doc told me to make sure I don't lose any more. I think if I were as restricted as you are, I would probably lose more weight!

I would definitely talk to your ob.?
