How long does your baby nurse?

DS used to nurse for about 10-15 minutes each feeding, but since Wednesday, it's only been about 5-10 minutes each feeding.  He is still nursing at the same frequency, but just wondering about the change in length of time...we have our 2 month visit on Monday, so I'll ask the doc but just looking for any reasons now.  Thanks!

Re: How long does your baby nurse?

  • Sounds like he's getting more efficient.  My DS usually nurses 10-15 min, occasionally 20-30 or 5-10.  As long as he seems full and content I'm happy!

  • sometimes its 5-10 minutes - sometimes he'll close his eyes and eat forever (45-55 minutes!!). I hear the feedings get shorter as they get older because they become more efficient!
  • Overnight, my DS is all business... 8-10 minutes on each side and he's done.  During the day, it's a different story -- it often takes him 45-60 minutes to eat.
  • at my BF class yesterday i asked this....he went from 10-15 min, to 10 min to 5 min.....she said ditto to above posters, he has gotten more efficient and that he gets all he needs in those 5 min. If your baby gets hungry again soon after though, try to offer him the boob againor the other one after he latches off the 5 min..........
