Devastated - Just got a call from DH

We just found out DH has SVT. Crying

I don't even have words right now. He's going to a specialist on the 31st to talk about a surgery.

FIL died at age 40 when DH was 5 and SIL was 6...same thing (plus cholesterol issues and was an alcoholic). I don't want to be widowed at a young age, Nathan has so much yet to learn from him. I know I'm thinking worst case scenario, but man, that just shattered my world.

But don't worry!! It's very treatable with either an ablation (if he has an underlying Wolfe-Parkinson-White type syndrome and depending on where the electrical impulse is coming from) or most commonly, medication (may My dad is a cardiologist specialized in rhythms (electrophysiologist) and my cousin had this and my dad was saying it's really not a big deal. Hang in there! There's also other manuevers that he can do himself like holding is breath, coughing, pushing on eyelids...they're called vagal maneuvers...they slow the heart rate down.

I am sorry you got this news! However, I am a nurse in ICU/Cardiology and this is a very managable problem. Assuming your DH has a strong heart otherwise (which he prob does), then there are meds and also a simple surgery if needed to manage this problem fairly easily. It will be OK!

We don't know what kind it is yet, we'll know more when we see the specialist. He's already been on medication for the abnormal rythym (which they did NOT say was SVT) for a couple months and apparently after this last 21 day heart monitor it's not working. Therefore they're sending him to this specialist at Yale New Haven. He's the one that reviewed DH's file and in one day called back and said he had SVT (first we've heard of it) and to come in as soon as we can if the medication isn't working. WTH! It's just heartwrenching to see DH...he doesn't remember his Dad at all...so he's just wicked nervous, especially since Nathan is so little still.

Sorry, I was lurking, but I wanted to say I'm thinking about you guys. I had wolff-parkinson-white syndrome which they thought was SVT for the longest time. I was on meds for it but was young and didn't want to have to take the meds forever. I opted for surgery and at 21 had a catheter ablation done. I've been fine ever since then. GL to you and your family. Just keep positive thoughts!

I'm sorry to hear that but I also think that your FIL died mostly due to alcoholism in combination with it. My sister recently died due to alcoholism and anorexia at age 30. Her liver shut down. People don't realize how deadly alcohol can be sometimes. If he is healthy besides the SVT I pray and think that he will be fine. Worry doesn't do any good so just stay strong and everything will be ok.

Sorry to hear about your husband. I was diagnosed with SVT when I was about 12. I was put on medication until I was 18. I no longer need the medication. Hopefully your husband will get good news when you go to the appointment.
