Hi ladies. I usually post on GP, but I lurk here often and have learned so much. Hopefully some of you can give me some insight on my situation.
I went off bcp in January. Since then, I have had to be put on meds to start new cycles, and have never ovulated. (I do chart.) I had bw done in July, my thyroid & prolactin were normal. Last cycle I was put on 50 mg of clomid.(no ovulation) I met with my OBGYN yesterday. He wants me to do 100mg of clomid this cycle, w/ no monitoring, only bw to see if I ovulated. I questioned this several times, telling him I feel like I should be monitored, and requesting more testing. He feels at this point more testing is an unneccesary expense, and that if I went to an RE they would only wonder why he hadn't tried 100mg of clomid before referring me. The only reasons he gives me for no ovulation is the possibility of me being too thin or slight PCOS. I asked him for testing to see if I did have PCOS, he said there was none. I am confused at this point. Am I crazy for even having to ask if I should switch doctors, or am I over reacting & being impatient?
Thank you for your help! Sorry if this was rambling...

Re: Intro & questions
Your GYN is incorrect. Many of us never even went to the gyn to start the process, I went straight to an RE, had testing and THEN conitinued with treatment. Please do not be forced into something you don't feel is right (and you are correct in feeling as you do) Monitoring is so important on clomid as it can effect your lining, cause cysts etc.
If you do not need a referral for insurance reasons, please go to an RE. If you do need a referal look into anotehr Gyn so that you can get one.
Good luck and welcome to the board!
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!

I would go to an RE, first and foremost. If that's not possible, at the very least find a better OB. That is not true that they can not test for PCOS--blood works & ultrasounds confirm PCOS. Also, that is complete BS that an RE would wonder why he didn't try 100mg before sending you to him. I never even messed with a ob/gyn, we went straight to my RE. Do you have to have a referrel to go to an RE or can you just go on your own? If you can, go on your own. But either way, I would not continue treatment with that doctor.
FWIW, I was never monitored on clomid except for one cycle. I would take it, then bring in my chart to my RE. However, clomid did not effect my lining. It just didn't make me ovulate. In hindsight, it would have been nice to have monitoring so that we could have moved on faster, but on the flip side, my RE is 4 hours away round trip and it would have been a waste to go for monitoring because I only responded 2 out of 6 cycles.
REs are really the best at dealing with this. There could also be other issues than just our anovulation. Good luck.
Ditto.
My insurance did not require a referral and I never asked for one. I just called up a local RE and he ordered all the initial testing. If he thought it was weird for us to go straight there, he never let on to it.
Also, you didn't mention any testing you've had but have you had an HSG or a SA for your DH? All the clomid and ovulating in the world won't help if your tubes are blocked or you have a severe MF.
Good Luck!
Thank you so much ladies! I was so caught off guard yesterday, that there were many things I wish I would have mentioned to him-after he said I may have pcos and I tried to question him, he then went back to saying it was probably bc I am underweight (I am about 5'7, 115-not extremely underweight like I feel he was suggesting)
Thank for for verifying that I am not over thinking this.
Love & luck to my 3TC girls. Congrats to Omega-The boys are here!

I agree with the ladies above..Your OB is not listening and it is laughable that he said their are no tests to determine PCOS..
Call a local REs office tell them your concerns and see whatthey say..i bet they would be happy to take you on as a pt..i also didn't need referals with my insurance..I wasn't happy with the care i was recieveing form my OB after my first m/c so i called a local RE and he scheduled me for an appointment immediately! GL to you..
Don't ever do anything medically that you even have a bit of doubt about!
No, we have not had either of these tests. He said that the odds of my tubes being blocked are low, so we shouldnt do an expensive test before trying clomid since it is inexpensive. As I type this, it makes me feel stupid for considering listening to him.

No need to feel stupid! I guarantee you that most people who started out with IF treatment look back and think about the "stupid" things they did, or allowed their dr to do, because they didn't know enough at the time. I did 2 unmonitored cycles of Clomid with my ob/gyn because I didn't know monitoring was something I should be pushing for. I really liked my ob/gyn, but even then I think she was a little out of her league.
I agree with the pps and want to add that you are your only advocate for your medical care, so if you have to "fire" your ob/gyn and find someone more qualified, more power to you!
First, I just wanted to say welcome to the board. The ladies here are very helpful.
Second, I wanted to throw in my two cents about everything also. You are 100% right in not trusting your gut about your current doctor. However, I disagree about jumping straight to an RE. Although, I do think this can be effected by your area. There are many great doctors that have a lot of knowledge regarding infertility that are not RE. The generally speaking the RE obviously has way more knowledge then your regular gyn. For me personally I found a great ob/gyn that dealt with infertility. She did the tests to find out some of my issues and then we progressed from there. She did monitoring for my clomid cycles and bloodwork as necessary. I was thankful that she did this, because 1. I knew it needed to be done. 2. It was WAY less expensive for me then going straight to the RE. Plus she followed the same protocol that my RE would have started me with. All in all I say do a little research and figure out the best plan for you. But I think everyone agrees - find a new doctor! Sorry your current is so ill-informed. Good Luck
Don't feel bad at all! Before spending more time over here I didn't realize a lot of the things that should happen either.
I probably would have started testing with my ob/gyn if she hadn't blown me off when I expressed concerns. That was just the push I needed to see someone new :-)
I have a feeling my old doctor and your doctor are one in the same...i got this exact response almost verbatim from my old OB/GYN. He also said it was stress and that my bodying wasn't a welcoming site for pregnancy...how nice, right?
GL and definitely go to an RE...it makes all the difference and puts you at ease with the monitoring!

This. It really sounds like your doctor is not taking your concerns into consideration. Also, there is testing that can confirm PCOS. I wish you the best of luck!!!
