I waited until 5 months to start solids. I tried rice cereal at 4 months and she had zero interest. At 5 months I started again with sweet potato and then eventually added in cereal.
we chose to wait until 6 months for georgia. our pedi said they recc. waiting until then b/c 1. the childs tounge is not developed enough to bring the food backward into the mouth & 2. it has been know to decrease food allergies. our pedia also added that nobody every listens to them & usually start around 4 months. i noticed around 5 months georgia was very intrested in food & what we were putting into our mouths, but we held out. she took to her food easily. i think i got info on it from various places: wholesome babyfood.com & super baby food - the book is what i can recall right now.
I waited until 6 months. His pedi told us 6 months is the recommondation. Liam has always been well over the 100th percentile, so gaining weight was not an issue.
We started rice/oatmeal cereal at 6 months per pedi's recommendation and I also didn't really see a reason to start earlier because we was satisfied on BM alone. Our pedi said she ok's some people to start at 5 months, but we didn't because DS had surgery a few days before he turned 6 months, so we waited until after the surgery and he was all healed to start any solids. We didn't want to give him anything that might cause a reaction that could have delayed his surgery.
Pedi told us 5 months due to neck control and then he had a bad cold so we actually began at 5.5 months with rice cereal. He HATED the rice so we eventually switched to oatmeal. At 10 months he eats everything, with no teeth too.
I started rice cereal at 5mos and veggies and fruits at 5.5 months. I waited on meats until 6.5 mos. DD is 9.5 months now and is just starting with "true" finger foods (chix, cheese, bread, pasta, etc) which she LOVES. She mostly still has cereal & stage 2 or 3 fruit for bfast, grilled cheese, pastina, tofu/avocado or other veggie for lunch and a stage 3 meat/veggie combo for dinner.
What do you consider "delaying"? We are not starting solids until 6 months and I consider that normal, since it's within the recommendation of 4-6 months and it's what our pedi recommended. Are you thinking later than that?

We started at about 6 months, he gagged so we stopped. We just started again and it is going so much better. He was tongue tied so the drs think that had a good deal to do with him gagging. We are taking it really slow but so far so good.
