Are you as career driven post-baby?

Just curious.  I sort of feel like my priorities have really changed.  I used to really want to get into management and now I'm pretty happy right where I am.

Though it could be that my previous job was so boring that I felt like I needed to be climbing the ladder for a challenge and wiith my new job, I'm stimulated enough with my work.

Re: Are you as career driven post-baby?

  • Yes - I was very gung ho about work and about the "team".  Now with my kids I can't imagine them not being the priority.

  • I'm not as driven as I was earlier in my life, but this happened before the baby.  At some point, I just realized that there are other things I'd rather be doing than working 80-hour work weeks to get ahead.  Especially because getting ahead means long work weeks!  I'm happy where I am right now.

  • No. I use to work my butt off doing other peoples work to get ahead. But now that I have a family it is not worth the stress and extra hours. I am happy right where I am.
  • I am still driven in the sense that I step up to take challenging projects on because I hate to be bored.  But, I was moving up fast pre-baby and now I am happy to stay at my level because I have a great work/life balance.  I think there's always time to be driven when my babies are older.
  • I am very driven to be more efficient at work. I get to emails/projects much more quickly than I did before. I guess I feel that I need to be more organized / more efficient so I can get home and spend time with DS and DH. ;-)
  • I am still very driven but for different reasons. Like PP I am driven for more efficiency now. I still want to move up but I am working smarter not harder. Having a family has helped with it, it has made me not sweat the small stuff and really helped me see things more "big picture".

  • I'm still pretty driven - it's just my personality.  But I'm not sure I would be able to commit the time to taking the next few steps so I'm going to take my time and not push it like I did before I had kids.  The one positive thing is with my type of job, the higher up you are, the more flexibility you have for vacation time and working from home.
  • Nope, not at all.  I was very focused and didn't mind doing the extra things before DS.  Now, I find myself wondering how to get out of extra functions.  Unfortunately, I know that this is not fair to the job, but eh, I'm still here collecting my paycheck.
  • I'm not at all.  I used to want management positions but now I have no desire for the added stress or travel it would require. I'm very happy where I am right now with great work/ life balance.
  • nope.  i do not take as much out of my personal life to do my job anymore.
  • I am not as driven.  I have put it on hold until my kids are older. I love my family time too much right now and am happy to leave my job and get home as soon as I can.
  • Nope, not at all... I used to work all.the.time, now I put down the work evenings/weekends so I can spend time with DD. And I'm also just not as focused as I used to be -- I spend more time here and on other parenting boards during the day than I really should Wink

I'm lucky that I'm in a job that is a perfect next step in my career, but it also offers great work/life balance and I am somehow kicking butt despite being a slacker! So it works out well. But if doing well in my current job (or taking the next step in my career) ever means sacrificing time with DD... I know exactly where my priorities lie.
