Re: Girl name poll

  • IMO, Jane and Anna are a little boring, Esme makes me think Twilight, and Millie is too old fashioned

I like Elizabeth the best  :)  Where you thinking of using a nn?

  • Yeah we probably would use a nn for Elizabeth but I like a few so I couldn't pick just one. I like Beth, Libby, Liza, Bessie.

Not Bessie!  I like Beth the best...

Also, I voted for Esme.  I love older names that aren't uncommon but aren't popular either.  However I agree w/becky - does remind me of Twilight...

  • I've never read Twilight or seen the film...so I had no idea about the Esme connection.

Yeah I really like older names. So I'm open to suggestions. I love Violet and Harriet but because our last name starts with T, I think it makes it hard to say.

  • Our favorite boy name is Emmett (also a twilight character).

Also really like Dean.  For the first boy we'll use Leslie as a mn.  Started as a boy name, but is generally used for girls now.  It's a family name on DH side and is his MN, (first generation to have it as MN...)

For girls my #1 choice is Josie.  Also really like Sophie, Jane, Claire (but that's really popular), Rae (mn)...

  • I really like Sophie and Claire but Josie just makes me think Josie and the Pussycats and I can't get past it.

  • Hmmm... I never had that association.  Oh well, I still love it!

  • I'm sure I'll be the only voting for it, but I love Millicent and Millie.  We wanted to use it, but it sounds horrible with DH's last name - so we ruled it out.

  • I voted Jane. It's no more plain than Grace or half of the other one-syllable classic names; I don't know why people say that. I think it's just that Jane is not overused.

I also like Anna and Millie.

  • I like Elizabeth best, and then Jane.

Re: Millicent/Millie... It's a nice name, but I do think it sounds very old-fashioned.  That said, you're Kiwi and perhaps it's more common over there.  I did a quick Google search and saw Millie at #54 on the NZ list for 2008 -- I can assure you that it's not nearly so common here in the USA (it's not even in the top 1000 after 1966, according to the Social Security Administration).  This probably influences the responses of some of us.

  • I don't think Millie is too old sounding at all...and besides some of the old fashioned names are making a comeback...and its not a name you hear every day!   BTW, I know a Millie...she's in her 20's....very hip and beautiful - definitely do not conjure up "old fashioned" at ALL!

  • Jane is a great name; it was my dh's grandmother's name & we've talked about choosing it for a daughter.  My second choice from your list would be Anna.

  • Jane, Elizabeth and Anna are in my top favorite names of all time. I voted for Anna.?
