1st Trimester

Fifths Disease and Pregnancy

My nephew was around me the other day and my sister called me and told me that he has Fifths Disease, which is bad for the baby.  What would you do and would be freakin out?  I'm gonna call my doctor tomorrow.

Re: Fifths Disease and Pregnancy

  • It can cause miscarriage in the first trimester.  I think because of the high fever.  Keep checking your temp.  In the other trimesters it isn't so bad but can cause a heart condition called hydrops.  A child in my class had it in my first tri, so I got tested.  I had never had it before, didn't catch it that time and could still catch it.  Then in my 3rd tri another child had it (beginning of the next school year, diff class) and I had ot get tested again.  This time I already had the antibodies, already had it sometime in my pregnancy, they guessed 2nd tri, and had to have an untrasound to check for hydrops.  She was fine.  Ask your mom if you ever had it.  Once you have had it you are immune.

  • Thanks!  I'm gonna call the doctor tomorrow to have me tested.

  • How much exposure do you have to have with the person who is infected?
  • Doc tested me for it when he did my routine b/w. It showed I had the antibody. Most people do if you're a teacher, etc.

  • I guess you have to have it and get over it.  Like you may or may not catch a cold from someone if you are near them.  If you have a super strong immune system, you can sort of get it, but not know it because your body beats it.  (Of course your body beats it anyway, but bests it before you get sick.)  Adults usually do not get the rash, just the fever.  Now that you know, you can just watch out for fever, and have your doc check tomorrow.
