Know anything about GFCI outlets?

I've lost another 75oz of breastmilk due to the outlet in our garage!!  I am so annoyed and frustrated.  The only outlet in our garage is GFCI so it has a test/reset button.  The reset button has popped twice causing me to lose all of my frozen bm (first 300oz and now this).

Any ideas as to why it would be popping?  Any suggestions?  Thanks!

Re: Know anything about GFCI outlets?

  • Sorry I know how frustrating this is. This is exactly what happened to ours so it wasn't covered under our freezer warranty because they said it was electrical. What kind of freezer do you have? FIL works at Martins Water and Appliance in Cleona and he thinks it might be a faulty fuze in our freezer. I will let you know what we find out.

  • I just wanted to say sorry. That stinks big time!
  • No advice, just sympathies. How frustrating!
  • That totally stinks:( I sent it to DH and he said:

The easiest thing to do is just change the GFI to a regular receptacle. Unless it is being used next to a sink or wet location it is not really necessary. The circuit breaker will still protect the fridge.

That being said, the reason it may be tripping is that?s it is just an old receptacle, or there is an issue with the fridge.

But I it would be just as safe if it is plugged into a regular outlet.

We have a small chest freezer from Lowe's.  I think the brand name is Magic Chef?  I'm wondering if it's a fuse or surge of some kind that is causing the outlet to reset.  I'll look forward to hearing what you find out.

Thanks so much for asking him, Lillian.  I think we should switch the receptacle- great idea!   I hope it's not an issue with the freezer as we've only had it for 4 months and I don't want to have to deal with the warranty.

Thanks for your thoughts ladies.  I keep thinking about that time wasted at the pump :(

  • This might not have any relevance, but recently we were at Sears just browsing new refrigerators.  We told the salesperson that we had an old fridge in our garage and would most likely put the current fridge in the kitchen in the garage if we ever bought a new fridge for the kitchen.

She warned us that newer models of fridges (and freezers???) have some sort of climate control feature on them that where if the garage was not temp controlled, the fridge could shut off.  Can't really tell you why (if she even explained that to us), but apparently older model stuff didn't have this new feature.  I also don't know why manufacturers would do this, but when I read your post about the freezer shutting off, it made me think of this.

However, I believe you have a freezer chest and I'm thinking they are more or less designed for areas like basements and garages that may not necessarily be climate controlled.  I don't know if this is at all helpful, but thought I would offer this up.

I'm so sorry that you've lost so much BM.  That truly sucks.

  • Oh no! I don't have any advice, but I'm sorry this happened to you again. How sad/frustrating!
