Skinny GP check in (better late than never)

Ok, for newbs this is how it works: share healthy recipes, fitness / nutrition tips and anything helpful relating to healthy living.

My tip for the week:

I have found that greek yogurt is a fantastic substitute for sour cream in almost any recipe. It has tons of protein and fiber and much more nutritionally complete.

I recommend using it for homemade tzasiki (sp) by mixing with shredded cucumber, a little garlic and lemon juice. I then like to spread it on a pita and cover with diced chicken, cucumbers and tomatoes!

  • I love whole-wheat couscous.  It tastes the same as regular (esp. when cooked in chicken broth), and it's great to have around in the summer since it's good warm and cold.

Wash it down made with a margarita made with fresh-squeezed lime juice sweetened with Splenda to taste (rather than a mix)....yum!

  • In my quest to rid our home of artificial sweeteners, I now use agave syrup to sweeten my coffee. Its similar to honey, but thinner in consistency and not as strong of a taste. It has a lower GI index than sugar so it doesn't cause a spike in blood sugar.

    Ooh! I like this idea.

I am also trying to get off the artificial sweeteners.

Another tip: remember that sugar / honey / agave syrup all have calories.  Doesn't matter where they come from or what their GI index is.  Just because something is "natural" doesn't mean that your body won't store it as fat!

  • I like to either get prefrozen or freeze bite size fruit like raspberries, blueberries, or peach slices. Its a healthier alternative to ice cream when I'm searching for something frosty in the freezer. (Yay that's my #100 post!!! :))
  • www.bodyforlife.com is free and gives diet & exercise advise.  My friend is doing it and lost 10lbs in a week (granted he's a guy Stick out tongue).  I haven't looked at the diet part really, but the exercise info/plan is really easy.  They rotate cardio and weight training.  The cardio is only 20 mins and the weights take around 40 mins.  You pick the exercises you like and can change them daily with one day off per week (day off shouldn't be changed).

So you mix the yogurt and the powder?  Or the yogurt w/ the pudding mix already made?

  • Before you workout do ballistic warm ups. That means jumping jaxs, arm swings, hopping up and down. After your work out do you static stretches, those are your floor stretches, touching your toes, and your yoga type movements. When doing this, I am never sore after a work out.

  • I hate cutting up fruit and veggies so I have found that it's easier to cut them all at once Sunday afternoon and place them in smaller containers so throughout the week my salads and snacks are already prepared I just have to add low cal dressing to the salad.

This saves time during the week, and makes healthy snacks readily available.

After 4 years, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs our surprise miracle is here!

Yeay! it is def yummy, i was thinking about it last night and you will need a couple scoops of vanilla froz yogurt, more than a cup, or you could add some ice, that might work better.

  • I like to keep a set of weights by the couch.  While I am watching TV I will do arm exercises with the weights.  I also try to do crunches or push-ups during the commercial breaks.
