TTC after 35

Still no word from RE

I had blood work done and DH had a semen test.  I went on Aug. 6th and I thought we would be starting IVF fairly quickly.  I called today and they told me no news is good news- so I guess DH's semen count & motility and my FSH numbers were ok.  But man, this is soooo draining.  I feel so much more pressure now that I'm over 40.  I forgot what a wave of emotions the process is.   Ok- strapping myself into the roller coaster now... hopefully it begins soon.
3 IUI's and 2 IVF's later- Brady arrived. Born at 36 weeks after PUPPS and pre-e/HELLP.
IUI- BFN IVF #1 -BFP! Allie is our 2nd IVF baby. Born at 36 1/2 weeks after pre-e again

Re: Still no word from RE

  • They should call you with the result....good or bad! I would call them and ask it the results are in yet, or make another appt with RE to discuss them!

  • Do you have another appointment with them scheduled?  That is sort of strange that they said that.
  • You should get on top of them right away. There's no reason it should take them this long to get those results. When I did my first IVF and they ran a ton of tests on me and DH, we had the results within days.

Also, are you going to the same RE as you did when you had your son? If so, I'm not sure why they are rerunning some of the tests. I'm on IVF #2, TTC #2 and they barely ran any tests on me and did one quick blood draw on DH. I went for my first appointment in July and did IVF in August.

  • We are going to a different RE- that's why the additional tests.  Cornell Hospital is supposed to be one of the best in the country for IVF so I got a lot of pressure from friends/relatives to go there.  But I have to say, so far I'm not impressed.  It seems like a factory and they pick the best candidates and the rest of us get the leftovers.  Really, the RE said I'm old, overweight (never got around to losing baby weight) and DH has issues so we're not great candidates for IVF.  I feel like she wrote us off.

But I'm sticking with her for now because of the great reputation of Cornell- plus they take my insurance so some of the cost is covered.  But I'll give it a little longer and then I'm going back to my 1st RE.   I really liked her- it was just soooo expensive.

  • That's horrible. I'm so sorry you're dealing with such an insensitive RE. They are supposed to be helping you stay positive and keep your hopes up, not point out every little thing that might be wrong.

I don't know, if it was me I'd probably look for someone else covered by the insurance if the first RE that you liked isn't covered. This place may have a good reputation, but doesn't mean it's the right fit for everyone. And their bedside manner is clearly horrible.

  • Oh, I just realized you are in NY. I am in the NY area too. I would highly recommend NY Continuum Reproductive Center. It's by Columbus Circle. I've been seeing Dr. Keltz for both IVFs and he is wonderful and the nurses are great too (I had an incident with a non-regular nurse for a blood draw and the "regular" nurses and dr. were wonderful). I'm not sure what insurance you have but they take a bunch of different ones.

I've been a slow responder on both IVFs and not once have they made me feel that something is "wrong" with me. Good luck w/ whatever you decide to do.

Thanks so much for the recommendation!  I will check them out.  I am an east side girl so it's hard for me to get to Columbus Circle but it's worth the trip if they're good.  I'll call and see if they take my insurance.  The doctor I went to was Dr. Cecelia Schmidt-Sarosi.  I really liked her.  She doesn't take any insurance!

Thanks for the encouragement.  I know the statistics are against me but you're right- I don't need to hear it every time!

  • That's too bad Columbus Circle isn't near you, but if you're up for checking them out I'd say give it a go. Hopefully they take your insurance.

Yeah, i can't imagine why any RE would be so negative toward a patient. Clearly all of us dealing with IF know we have some issues. What we need from the REs is just some support that a baby is possible. Try to stay strong and don't let naysayers deter you. :)
