Glider vs. Rocking Chair?

Ok aside from the fact that the gliders are usually heavily cushioned and the rocking chairs are not, what is the difference? ?Why would one get a glider vs. a rocking chair?

?I am torn between a glider and this rocking chair

Re: Glider vs. Rocking Chair?

  • Holy cow, why is it so expensive? I almost thought it was just one of those moon chairs!
  • Loading the player...
  • LOL that rocking chair is actually more expensive than the glider I want.

Is it comfortable? My guess as far as the difference between a glider and rocking chair is the way they move! Other then that, I would say that yea, gliders do tend to have more cushion!

  • I think that one of the big differences is that the glider is a bit smoother than a rocking chair.

  • This is not scientific or anything, but I've always liked a glider better than a rocking chair because it's less jerky. I would think a baby would appreciate that too. JMO. :)
  • I thought that the upholstered, cushioned gliders were more comfortable and better looking than a plain wooden rocking chair.  And I think the rocker that you posted seems overpriced, too!  But I guess it's more stylish than a traditional rocking chair.

  • Ya that's my other issue... I'm not sure how willing I am to spend $300 on a fancy looking chair from Target...... And I don't want to put it on my registry either - I feel like that;s a bit too presumptuous. ?

  • I went for a glider because our floors are carpet and I think rocking chairs are too hard to rock on carpet. Also, what the PP said about rocking chairs being jerky while a glider just.... well glides :)!

  • Rocking chairs tip over easier than a glider would (if you have a rambunctious toddler bouncing around, you wouldn't want that thing to flip).  Also, the bases of rocking chairs can squish little feet if you accidentally rock over them.  Gliders pose less of a hazard that way, unless they're actually sticking their little fingers in the sides.

  • I would definitely try to find a chair with armrests.  You'll really wish you could prop up your elbows when that baby starts getting heavier on your tired, sleepy arms.  =)

This is why I got a glider... little hands/feet and the dog's tail.

  • We bought a glider with an ottoman.  Before we decided on what to buy, we visited a relative for several days who had a glider in her living room.  I spent the whole visit in that chair.  It's great for chatting, reading, watching TV.  So we bought a handmade solid oak one that goes with our decor in the living room.  It's pretty practical and I expect I'll be using it long after baby is grown up.  But now every time my Dad comes to visit us, he sits in my glider and I have to sit on the sofa. :o(

  • Traditional rocking chairs are VERY hard to rock on carpet, especially if your carpet is thick.  Gliders move a lot more simply and smoothly.

We got an upholstered rocker and it's different because the mechanism isn't just on the floor.  I prefer it to a glider because the gliding motion gives me motion sickness pretty bad.  I had a traditional rocking chair in the room before that and could barely move it because of the carpet.

  • Honestly, that chair looks AWFUL for a nursery.  How will you get up gently with a sleeping baby to put them in the crib?  How will you feed the baby reclined back that far?  Where will you rest your arms?

Now, if you said it was for your ultra modern rec room - maybe.  And then there's the price.

  • I would think the glider would be more comfortable too.

  • Not that I have room for either, but I would never get a rocking chair, as I have a cat & small dog that likely would get smushed by one. That said, my mom rocked me in a wooden rocking chair, and I turned out ok :)
  • We got a glider because I loved the gliding ottoman.
