3rd Trimester

Anyone else worried about money?

So when the baby comes my monthly cost for insurance will go up $300 a month, plus day care and then everything else with having a child.

I am stressed beyond belief.  Anyone else stressed and what are you doing to make ends meet?

Re: Anyone else worried about money?

  • It is stressful, but those are all things that should be considered before TTC.

  • Loading the player...
  • They were considered but now it's becoming a reality.
  • Yea being on bed rest wiped out my vacation and sick time, so now what ever I take off when LO gets here will be without pay. That is stressing us out a little. It's only a couple of months, but still. LO's insurance will cost about $200 a month, and then daycare will be $400 a month. We have looked over money several times, and we will be OK, it is just going to be tight.

DH has three oportunities coming open at the beging of the year, all pay better and have a decent schedule, so we are hoping one of those work out.

Try not to worry about it all too much. I know it can get so overwhelming so quickly!!

  • The reality of it all is a little inimidating, we just bought a house so it is scary just because there are a lot of expenses we haven't had before. I can't wait to get through the first few months to see how the budget works out.

  • We are definitely stressed.  I knew that having a baby was expensive, but actually crunching the numbers makes me want to hide in bed forever.  When I return to work, day care costs will eat up almost all of our income outside of our current bills - and that's only for 3 days a week!  Then I start thinking about how having a baby is more than just day care, and that our expenses will go up even more than that and it scares the crap out of me and I just have to stop thinking about it.

  • Im doing my best to try to not think about it! Because otherwise I start having panic attacks. And yes, I knew the costs before ttc. However, losing my job at 12 wks pregnant wasnt in my plans.
  • Sort, I planned to take short term disabilty but after a mis communication on corp. end of things I cannot, so I will be getting 3 weeks paid instead of the 6-12 I thought I would be getting.

That's how it is with me.  I only get 4 compared to the 6 -12 I thought, and I just found out we have to pay back the pay in the summer, so really they are just loaning the money to us while we are on maternity leave.

  • I think our insurance goes up like $15 a month and I'll be a SAHM so those aren't really stressing us out, but we still are trying to put back as much money as possible for emergencys.

I am actually most worried about not being able to breastfeed and having to buy formula.  It's not an expense that would break us or anything, but it's an expense I don't want.

  • Yep, we're stressed.  To add to all the usual baby and day care expenses, we moved across the country a year ago and our old home is STILL on the market, so we have two housing payments each month.  Fun!  Yes, we've crunched the numbers and we can do it, but it won't be easy.

  • MH lost his job in June so yeah there is a huge amount of stress going on.  He probably made double what I do. I work full time and get STD for 8 weeks for my c-section, but I will not be taking the additional 4 weeks FMLA unless he gets a job by then.  Luckily, I already pay the family premium for insurance because of my son, so that won't go up any more (until my employer raises our premiums in January like they do every year).  I just hope and pray MH gets another job and some of the prospects he has pan out ::crosses fingers::
  • I'm a bit stressed too, but I know it will work out.  We can afford this baby but our lifestyle will have to change.  One of my coworkers always told me that if you wait to have a baby until you think you can afford it, then you never will.
  • When we were TTC our business was doing really well so we thought ok, we can do this now.  However since then we had a job that got messed up and we had to pay to send our installers out to NJ to fix it, we got threatened to be sued so we had to hire a lawyer (we won that, although it still cost a lot of money), and we had a "client" that scammed us using stolen credit cards.  All a bunch of things we weren't expecting and seriously drained us.

Right now we are struggling month to month and it has me pretty freaked out.  Even though we did think about everything before we TTC, we couldn't have forseen everything that happened.  I know things will somehow work out, but it is hard to see that right now.

So,  you are definitely not alone in being worried about money.

  • Me me me...

and while granted this was considered before TTC there have been so many changes in the past few months.. wks even that have now affected this.

Im not so much worried abt ins other then co-pays but thats nothing she is going on my BF ins and they cover him and her. My job used to but we got sold so now they just cover me and i have to pay if i add her to mine.. but its all the extra expenses now that are/have been adding up and will add. Especailly day care. I had to either chose btwn a pay cut or to lose my job.. so i chose the cut... we are going to make it work but it is overwhelming when i sit and just think abt it all

Employers don't raise plans but insurance companies do. There are many things that factor in to raising premiums, but your employer does not make that decision. Just an FYI

BTW- Everyone gets worried, but we'll all be ok!

  • I am super stressed about this. We were doing great and then around 4 months DH and I both got laid off from our jobs and have not been able to find anything yet. Just keeping my fingers crossed that DH will get a job soon and in the meantime we are really focusing on tightening our belts and saving all we can. I know it will work out for us, and for all of you facing the same stresses

  • why is your insurance going up so much? are you a single parent?

with us, it didn't change. a family was 2 or more people. so it stays the same from when it was just the two of us and now with 3 kids.

also, we factored in everything prior to making family plans.

It's a joke.  My school district pays 75% of the premium if it's just me and 50% of the premium for families.  My husband works for himself so to add the baby on to my insurance makes it go up $300.

  • We were definitely aware of the expenses that we would be faced with, but staring at the actual reality is different.  There will definitely be some lifestyle changes, considering that just daycare costs a little over $1k per month

Ditto this. LOTS of things have changed since I found out I was pregnant. None of those changes could have possibly been accounted for prior to TTC.
  • I just lost my job and insurance last week.  DH makes a third of what I did and doesn't have health insurance offered to him at his job.  I'm freaked out as well.  You don't always know what lies ahead.  We're going to have to exhaust our savings now.  I don't like it at all.
  • I am SO stressed! LO was quite the surprise (although we are very pleased) but I'm in the midst of an expensive divorce (which should have been waaaay over by now) and swamped in medical bills due to an unplanned surgery last fall. (Which is what enabled us to be surprised - before the surgery I couldn't conceive.) AND my maternity leave is all unpaid other than what I have saved up in vacation days, plus I'm having a C so I have to be out of work for at least 8 weeks. UGH SO STRESSED but love LO so we will struggle for a bit but it's all worth it.

  • i am worried, but itry not to let it get to me. i handle all the bill paying in the house so it's not easy. i know we make enough money, i just wish we had more savings. of course we considered this before ttc but things have changed in the past 7 months. we had a couple house projects run over budge, and my dh injured his back in april and has been on light duty since then- which means less $ coming in. thankfully, dh is back to full duty next week which will help greatly. we are now praying that he doesn't reinjure or reaggravate the back injury and have to go back out again.

Plus, not every couple is TTC when they become pregnant!!?

  • Yes, and add to that both DH and I got paycuts since becoming pregnant and our insurance premiums are going up significantly this year (not including the cost of adding the baby to it).  We're going to be be making a lot less money than we were when we got pregnant.

  • I worry that something unforseen will happen and leave us in a bad position financially, but we should be okay (especially since I completed my advanced degree and get a decent raise this year, which balances out the unpaid leave I'm taking).  We're certainly not going to have much disposable income every month, but we shouldn't be hand to mouth.  If we ended up in a dire situation, shoot, I'd go work evening shifts at Target.
  • Also my insurance will go way up too.....I forget the exact amount but it was in the $250-300 range. It just depends on your healthcare plan.....mine sucks. One out of four times I see a dr or have a test, I end up getting billed for the full amount because they submit the claim to my ins, and my ins doesn't pay it. I have to fight with our ins. to get things paid that are covered. Once I paid the bill in full and was supposed to be reimbursed by ins. co. but it never happened, so now I fight with them every time. Soooo frustrating. Fiance doens't have health insurance, so I can't wait til one of us finds a job with a better insurance plan. Fingers crossed for early 2010!!! Good luck to everyone. :)

  • I am a worrier by nature. Even if we had a billion dollars in savings I think I would still worry. I know how much our bills are every month and how much is left over every month and it is more than enough. But I will stress about adding daycare costs and other baby expenses to the mix. Plus my parents are coming down to nanny for us for the first 6 months or so and after they leave our childcare costs will double (we are paying for their aparment). We are just considering it a good opportunity to really get used to all of our new expenses and save as much as possible.
  • We are worried and know that things will be different but so much happened during this pregnancy that we weren't expecting (besides the pregnancy itself) that we've learned to roll with the punches. I know the gist of our financials but my hubs doesn't want me stressing so I don't know the specific details. We are fortunate however that we have family and friends who are offering to help us out in various ways that I don't know how we will ever pay them all back.

I was told I couldn't get pregnant, well we were surprised. I thought I'd be able to work pretty far into the pregnancy, well my Dr said no go. I thought we would be in our own place but because of no work for me we moved in with my IL's to save money. Things come up but we are making the best of everything and doing the very best we can.
