Nickname for Elijah

The nickname for Elijah would be Eli, right? If we never call him Eli, and only Elijah, do you think people would still try to call him Eli?

Re: Nickname for Elijah

  • So do you NOT want a nn for Elijah? Whatever you call him, just make it known that it's how you want him to be known. He might choose a different nn down the road.

  • I don't dislike Eli as a nickname, I just don't love the idea of only calling him by his nickname, kwim?

  • I felt like this with my first son, Benjamin.   Prior to him being born, I really wanted everyone to call him Benjamin, not Ben.  Now that he's here, he's totally a Ben, and that's what we call him. I don't think you can foretell what you will call them, or what everyone else will call him.  Our neice (who's 16) calls him Benji, and the babysitter's daughter and my grandmother call him Benny.  I really don't mind any of those nicknames now that he's here and forged all those unique relationships.

And the same goes for my Natalie....as much as I wanted her to be called by her full name, she still gets called Nat and Natty by people, even us.

I bet once Elijah is here, you'll find your self calling him Eli, even if you always introduce and refer to him as Elijah.  And people will follow suit as they hear what you tend to call him.

  • Some people are nicknamey and some aren't... those who really want to call him Eli will do so whether you want them to or not! I think a lot of people will ask "Do you call him Eli" and when you answer that you don't then they won't either.
  • I think nicknames just happen a lot of the time, whether you want them to or not. I have a 4 letter name and never thought I'd have a nickname, but people still shorten my name!
  • Unfortunately, people will probably shorten his name when he goes to school.  It seems to happen to the best names!  I love Benjamin but don't like Ben.  Christopher always turns into Chris, etc.
  • My brother is named Andrew, but my parents wanted his nickname to be Drew and not Andy.  They always introduced him as Drew and if anyone called him Andy then they said his name is Drew.  They didn't have any trouble getting people on board with the name they preferred and I think you could do the same if you want your son to be called Elijah.

This exactly. This is why we went with Adam! No obvious nicknames! Elijah will be called Eli. Don't use Elijah if it will bother you that people call him Eli. I LOVE Ethan on your list. That won't be shortened!?
