My LO's poop is green!

I am EBFing... LO's poop was the typical yellow/ gold seedy, but has changed to green and seedy.  It's also kind of stinky.  Is he having a reaction to what I've been eating?  I haven't been eating a lot of green things.  He doesn't seem bothered or in any pain.  What do you think?

Re: My LO's poop is green!

  • he is not getting enough hindmilk.. that is a result of all foremilk.. make sure that he is getting a full feed and pulling off when he is done. dont remove him from a breast until he finishes and then you can try and offer him the other breast.

  • wow I didn't know this at all!!! DD had a couple of diapers like this and I was worried. now I'm not. thanks!
  • I saw this on KellyMom.com yesterday, there were a few articles on it...

This is a good one from there:

  • This can also signal a food intolerance, in my DD's case it was dairy.  From what I understand, if the poop has a "frothy" consistency it's the foremilk/hindmilk issue, if it's more mucousy it's likely related to something you've eaten.
  • I asked my pedi about this at DD's appt yesterday. ?He said the same thing as pp about the hindmilk vs. foremilk. ?However, sometimes, DD falls asleep before she can get to the hindmilk. ?The pedi said that, as long as she is gaining weight (DD is in the 90% for weight!), it's fine. ?

  • The hindmilk/foremilk thing is actually rare... it's more likely that it's something you ate.  My DS usually has at least one greenish poo a day and it's because I eat lots of produce, I think!
  • My LO's poop started becoming dark green but still seedy when she was around 3 weeks old. I thought it was a foremilk/hindmilk inbalance even though she seemed to be emptying the breast. Every poop looked this way until she turned around 6 weeks and it become a brighter green, very runny and mucousy (and stinky!). This stuff could not be contained by any diaper. It ended up she has the milk protein allergy and the dr thought it had been developing for several weeks. I've been dairy free for 3 1/2 weeks and her poop is all yellow/tan colored now. Just another thought for you. Good luck!

This for me too.  A little green is no big deal, but green that is frothy could mean foremilk/hindmilk and green with blood or mucus could be food allergy, usually dairy.
