Anyone know about kids being "tongue tied"?

My nephew went to the dentist today and they recommended that they cut the skin under his tongue to prevent possible speech problems later. I thought maybe someone else here knew about this or had an experience I could share with my sister.

  • Gavin was EXTREMELY tongue tied at birth.  The Lactation Consultant at Kennestone said it was one of the worst she had ever seen and she was suprised he was able to nurse at all even with a nipple shield.  As soon as he was discharged from the NICU we were sent straight to an ENT and he clipped it right there in the office- no biggie at all.  He was 5 days old.  It was such a minor procedure only the teensiest drop of blood- Gavin even slept through it!  It is probably a little more involved for an older child, but still nothing to worry about.

  • Forgot to mention that he is 4 years old. I wish they had known sooner like you did. I think it will involve anesthesia now.

  • I had an upper frenectomy (also called frenulectomy) done at about age 8. A couple tiny shots were used to numb the area before the procedure. It wasn't too traumatic and I really don't remember it hurting.

  • My brother had this problem when he was younger, I think until he was about 7 or so. He pronounced his "R"s like "W's" Then he had to go to speech therapy for a little bit afterwards. It wasn't a big deal.

  • My little brother had his tongue clipped when he was about 4-5 years old. They caught it in school. He was having trouble speaking clearly and stuttering a lot. I don't remember it being a big deal. They did it and he maybe cried a little but that was it.
