3rd Trimester

GD Diet for non GD person?

Is the GD diet safe for a non GD person....? It seems like it is based on healthy eating so I was just wondering? I just feel like I need to do something to get my weight gain under control. I have gained 28 pounds and I am 33 wks pregnant. I am starting to get really down about my weight gain. Although I know it is not a crazy weight gain it is still pretty high for someone who is only 5 feet 1 inch. ?This weight gain on someone 5 8 wouldnt even be noticable, but on me not so much!:o) My doctor hasnt said anything negative to me about my weight gain however, I was told by her in the first trimester to try to keep my weight at no more then 25 lbs because of my height. So I know I am over her set goal. ?I know weight post are hated on the bump but ladies we are all human and I know that at the end of the day if my baby is healthy that is all that matters but I am still self?conscience?and have been teased by pretty much everyone (except the hubs) about my weight during this pregnancy soooo go easy on me :o)

Re: GD Diet for non GD person?

  • There is nothing wrong with following the GD diet for a non-GD prenancy. It is simply healthy eating!

  • Dieting while pregnant is not safe.  If your doctor is not worried about your weight gain then you shouldn't be either.  The GD diet is all about limiting carbs and sugar, but you should check with your doctor before changing your diet in any way.

  • Is wanting to follow the GD diet to lose weight or stabilize it?

I have been following the GD diet for 2 1/2 weeks and as far as my scale says, I haven't gained any weight, but I haven't lost any either.

I agree with PP, talk to your doctor before you do anything. And I can tell you, if you don't have to follow the diet, don't. It's difficult!

  • If your Dr. is fine with your weight gain than I would just go with it.  My Dr. told me he was fine with me gaining 25 - 35 lbs, and towards the end you may start to hold constant or lose weight anyhow.  I would definately talk to your Dr. if I were you before following any type of diet.

  • talk with your doctor, but it is more about eating healthy than a 'diet' with the GD diet. I still follow it loosely now even far from pregnancy as I just feel healthier on it.  It taught me much better habits about good vs bad carbs (and not just the obvious ones like candy being bad....I don't handle juice well in the mornings blood sugar wise for example).

  • thanks ladies....for all the help. I wasnt hoping to loose weight just not gain anymore. And I felt that my doctor did have a problem with my weight gain because I have already went over her goal for me of 25 pounds? I just figured she wasnt the type of doctor to yell at me?
  • Don't listen to the people who like to warn that "dieting during pregnancy is dangerous."  Sure, drastically dieting, or crash dieting, is not a good idea, (duh...really?) but there is nothing wrong with improving your eating habits.  ALWAYS talk to your doctor first.  If they say it's fine, then why not?

Maybe just work on cutting out the more junk food type snacks, and replacing them with healthier options.  The GD diet is quite high in fat, so again, TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR.  It may not be what is best for you and LO.

I don't think it's ever bad to cut back on sugar but why call it the "GD Diet?" Just cut back on junk food, you'll be fine.
