Baby Names

I got an idea today for unique name trial...

I was at Olive Garden today and when I told the hostess "Table for two," she asked what name to put it under. I gave her one of the names on my name list (to see how she'd react to hearing a name that is uncommon) and I got to view her reactions.

I figured that this was a fun way to try out names that you might be considering (especially if you think that they might be too "out there"). When someone asks you for a name at a restaurant or whatever, give them one of your names and see how they react. You'll be able to judge if it's easy to understand, easy to spell, easy to say, etc. by their reaction. It was fun.?

Just thought I would share. Let me know if you try this!?

  • Great idea! Soooo how did she react????

  • That's a great idea! Thanks for sharing. :)
  • I gave her the name Finley L____... which is the name I'm trying to turn DH to if we have a boy... and she was totally cool with it. I got no negative reactions, and it was fun to use it in public.
  • While it does sound fun, I would take it with a grain of salt. When I was in college, I was a hostess and I got a lot of odd names and I never reacted to them. I don't think any hostess will look at you strange when you give them an unusual name. It's just their job to write down the name and they really don't care what the name is.?

True story. It was fun to use the name in public though. The more you use it will at least give you a better idea of how it sounds rolling off of your tongue and someone else's.?

Oh, yes! I completely agree. I'm sure it was really fun!?

  • if YOU told her Finley though she probably thought it was your name, which doesn't really help you feel out how it works for a boy....

  • I would think the person would be acting on their best behavior since you are a customer and they are hoping you tip well.

On a related note, I try to give anyone else's name besides my own when we have to do that.  Mine is too different.  I usually tell them my son's.

me too. :::sigh::: If I do tell them my name, I often get a blank look. Or a "what?" So you do get reactions! Or I can tell as they sit there pausing w/ the pen for a second, trying to figure out how to spell it. And my name is really not that "weird" at all, just not common in the US even though there's a famous actress and a book w/ my name :)

    But LOL, fun idea! :)
