2nd Trimester

If CD'ing...

What brands/types are you going to try out?  I have been doing research, but it is just all so overwhelming!

Re: If CD'ing...

  • I made a registry here: https://www.kellyscloset.com/

and I stuck to fuzzibunz and bumgenius because I've heard the best things about those.

We're going to be ECing (fingers crossed) so hopefully there won't be a lot of long-term diaper usage.

  • I bought 20 slightly used BumGenius 3.0s off of Craigslist.  I'm excited to use those, but I hear that they aren't great for newborns.  I've also bought a few off of Etsy just because they are adorable.  I might try a few others, as well as buying some pre-fold and covers since I know those will fit a tiny baby.  What I'm most excited about now is making my own.  I've bought/ordered all the fabric I need, and am working on my pattern!

    What is ECing?

  • We're using Chinese cotton prefolds and testing out some covers from Bummis and Thirsties.  (We haven't used them yet, but the Thirsties seem to have much better velcro than the Bummis.)

btw, I cannot rave about this store enough ~ www.WeeBunz.com!  The ladies there are so helpful and answered all of our questions  :)  There's also a bunch of reviews at this site, www.diaperpin.com

  • My plan is to use PF's and KL0's (kissaluvs, size 0) with thirsties XS and thirsties duos covers for newborn stage.  I have a couple different ones to try from there... BG Organic, Pocketchange, Goodmamas, um, can't remember what else.  I'm hoping to like grobaby and gdiapers (with cloth inserts) to cut down on laundry and have versatility (disposable inserts when needed).  Go lurk on EFF, that's where I've learned most everything over the last few months.
  • We CD'd DD from birth, and we will do it again with this LO.  We used a mix of preemie size prefolds, Kissaluv size 0's, and Prorap covers during the newborn stage, plus I had several bumGenius AIO x-smalls.  The one-size bumGenius (3.0) are really pretty bulky on a newborn.  DD was tiny, and I don't think we used them on her until she was close to 6 months or more.  Her clothes wouldn't fit over them until then, and they looked silly on her.

We continued to use prefolds a lot in the later stages, too.  They are so easy to launder.  But Proraps, though great for the newborn stage (because they are inexpensive, and you need more at that time due to more diaper changes and runny poo, plus they fit well around skinny newborn legs), they are not so great for later on.  We used Bummis Super Whisper Wraps and Thirsties later on.  We continued to use the sized bumGenius AIO's--I had x-smalls, smalls, and mediums.  And eventually we started using the one-size bumGenius, too.  I also had a handfull of fitteds, like a bumGenius bamboo fitted, a Thirsties Fab Fitted, and several Swaddlebees fitteds.

I recommend not investing in a bunch of any one kind of diaper (unless it's prefolds, because those are so versatile and inexpensive) until you get started.  Try some things out first to figure out what you like.  Different diapers fit different babies--chunky thighs, skinny thighs, low rise, etc.  For instance, we tried out a couple of FuzziBumz, and did not care for the fit at all.

For some basics, here's a link to a blog post I wrote on CDing a while ago--it has some pics and lots of helpful links, too:

  • we're doing a diaper service, and they use prefolds.

  • i am in your shoes missy!! i have been researching left and right - and its a LOT to take in! i think we have finally settled on gdiapers. (www.gdiapers.com) because you can use them as disposable (for on the go) and cloth (for when at home). they come in 3 sizes and TONS of cute colors, not too mention you can always dye, embellish, or embroider them. i am not buying a bunch of different types of diapers bc if these work, then i dont want to have wasted the money! i've heard rave reviews about them, so i'm super excited to give them a shot. if they dont work out, then that is when i will try something else.
  • We're going to be starting with PF's and covers (we didn't CD with DS so this is all new to us). We are starting with Green Mountain prefolds, KL0s, Thirsties Duo Wraps and Bummis Super Brites. We're getting a few pockets and AIOs but will mainly be using the PFs and covers. Go over to the Eco-Friendly Family board. I learned a ton over there just lurking, but they're also super helpful with questions! Good luck!

  • I have done a TON of research, cost analysis, customer feedback, availability, etc. Bum Genius AIO 3.0 seem to be the best. Target now sells packs of 2 online for the same price as cottonbabies.com. We bought 2 just to see if they will work and we are very pleased. Fuzzibunz came in a close second but eventually decided that BG is the winner for us. We are going to be using disposables for the first couple weeks until the cord falls off. I am expecting a big boy so I am sure he will fit the BG's just fine. Wishing you well!
  • Kissaluvs fitteds with Thirsties covers for the newborn stage, then BumGenius 3.0 AIO for the rest.
