What's the best remedy for drool rash?

DD has very sensitive skin and has had quite a few skin issues thus far including eczema. For the past two months (maybe longer) she's had a bright red rash at the base of her neck and at times when it's really bright red/raw, it irritates her and she scratches at it. I've always attributed it to drooling as did the pedi because it looks very different from the eczema patches that she gets from time to time on different parts of her body.Because we were talking about a lot of different skin issues, I'm not sure that the doctor recommended anything for this type of rash (or maybe I can't remember!)

She has no teeth (they HAVE to be coming soon...drooling lately is outta control!) and I've been trying my very best to keep her dry. My question is...should I be putting something on it? Or is it best to leave it alone, keeping it dry as best as I can?

I have used aquaphor and sometimes I feel like it helps because it doesn't appear as red but other times it seems like it makes it worse. I ended up giving her benedryl tonight because today was an itchy, irritated kinda day. I've also been keeping her shirtless here and there to allow air to get to it but it's such a tough spot, and the constant drool makes it so tricky.

Please give me some tips on what you think I should do because I feel so bad for her and it looks awful! Thanks so much!!

  • This may sound dumb but probably diaper cream. It's what I've always used on my rashes, but just Aquaphor on DS's.

  • Either Desitin Clear or dry it off and put a thin layer of Vaseline on it. The vaseline worked wonders for DS and it's cheaper.

  • I second diaper cream.  Ds sometimes gets red under his chin and arpits (when he has been sweating) and I have used diaper cream there with great results.
  • Thank you ladies..I will give diaper cream a try first thing in the morning! Fingers crossed....
  • Kayla gets that kind of rash on her chin from drool. I found that If I put A&D ointment on right before she goes to sleep for the night, it is usually gone by morning!

  • we actually had to get a prescription from the pedi. NOTHING worked to clear up her drool rash. You could also tell it was really itchy for her as she kept scratching it. If the other suggestions don't work I suggest asking your pedi.
  • Just something to think about: maybe the reason the Aquaphor appears to make it worse sometimes is because you're trapping the irritants from the saliva into the skin. Make sure the skin is clean and dry (difficult, I know) before applying anything over the affected area.

  • When he went through his major teething stage we were changing his clothes literally 10x a day.  Don't hesitate to put dry clothes on her every hour.

  • we were told to keep a thin layer of vaseline on it and when it flares (or at night before bed) put a thin layer of hydrocortisone plus vaseline. it works well for us. i tried everything before going to the dr. my lo is also rashy.
