signs "eat" every 20 minutes or so...normal?

My dd has been signing eat all the time and I keep giving her snacks (a cracker, a couple of grapes) when she asks because I figure she knows what she wants.  She is a wonderful eater but I am worried she might just have the eat command confused.    She eats a ton for breakfast, lunch and dinner.  Could she really be hungry or do you think she just doesn't know how to tell me anything else.  I offer water too in case she is just thirsty. If I don't give her a snack, she throws a fit and signs "eat" again.

Does your dc ever go through times where they eat a ton?

PS.  changed 4 dirty diapers today so I think she is getting enough...ha. sorry tmi.

  • What happens if you don't give her food?  Could she just be practicing with the sign, or has she had it for a while?  When DS first learns a sign, he uses it all of the time just to see what happens when he does it.

  • She's known it for about 4 months now but has used it a thousand times over the last week.  If I don't give her a snack, she throws a fit & stops when I give her a grape, etc.  But she LOVES food so I don't know if she is just getting happy because I am giving her a snack & it is masking the real issue...RRRR.  Anyone speak baby?

My 1 year old does this when he doesnt want to go to bed.....we go in his room and get ready for bed and he signs eat.  He knows I will give him food in the kitchen and he can leave his room.....so now I offer a snack before bed so he can't trick me!!!  I would try just giving breakfast lunch and dinner with two snacks around the same time in between....that way you know she should have had enough!

  • My DD says 'snack, snack' all day long. I give her food and 90% of the time she eats it. Sometimes I think she just likes the say the word. I was very surprised at how much she started eating once she turned one.
  • we go through the same thing. she is signing it ALL THE TIME. i offer a small snack. she eats great at her three 'meals' and i am giving her healthy snacks- so i figured- why not.
