Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Help! Sleep question - is DH crazy?

We used to put DS down at 8. A couple of months ago, he started to be so fussy at night, so we tried making his bed time earlier and he now goes down between 7 and 7:30. DH is reading Ferber right now and is saying DS should sleep at night from 9 - 6 and he should take two 1 1/2 hour naps for a total of 9 hours of sleep at night and about 12-13 hours in total at the end of the day. Does this sound crazy or difficult since DS goes to bed so early? He sleeps from about 7/7:30 - 6 now. Of course, interrupted sleep, which is why we're reading Ferber.

  • DD currently sleeps from 7-7 at night, and *usually* takes two 1.5 hour naps a day.

When she was 7 months old, she was going more like 6:30pm-7am with 2-2hr naps a day, so I don't think that's far fetched at all.

  • I think 9 months are supposed to have 14 hours of sleep, 12 months 13.5 hours of sleep.

    Ds slept from 7 - 7 at 7 months with 1 3 hour nap and 1 30min nap

  • DS has been going down at 7pm since I read all the sleep books around 6 months. I think it was Healthy Sleep Habits Healthy child that said that 7pm was a good bedtime for that age..
  • eh ferber was really off with that part of his book. healthy sleep habits happy child is soooo much better with how much your baby should sleep.   grant takes a one hour nap and a 2 hour nap (and then a cat nap later around 5 pm) and goes to bed at 7-7... which according to HSHHC is normal

  • We've never done any sleep training, but DS sleeps from 9-7 and then takes 2 1.5 hours naps (around 9 and 1:15) and most of the time a third cat nap (like 30 minutes) around 5:30.

We are very similiar to this.  I do want to say, though, just like adults, babies are all different.  I don't think you can say one bedtime for every baby.  Do what works for YOUR baby, not what any book tells you should work for all babies.  I realize you don't think what you have is working and you need to make some adjustments but it will be different for every child.
