any feta, goat cheese, or gorgonzola pasteurized

So my dr says cold cuts are fine etc... so he isn't strict with foods.  But he didn't go into detail about cheeses.  I really want goat cheese or any of the others listed above.  Are they a complete no no.  Whenever I ask restaurants if its pasteurized they look at me like im nuts.

TIA

  • Almost all cheese is pasteurized in the U.S. ?Enjoy it!

  • When you go to the grocery store you can read the labels to double check.  But I doubt the servers know if it's pasteurized or not.  If in doubt, skip.

  • Pasteurized is fine. if it's not, I'm pretty sure the menu would read "RAW" or "Home made".
  • I have feta in the fridge from Costco - President brand and it says it's made with pasteurized milk. It's a good thing too, because I bought the two giant tubs before I knew I was pregnant.
  • Unless you go to like a specialty spirit shop where they sometimes may import cheese, most cheese that you get at the grocery store is pasteurized.  I'd also double check if you shop at Whole Foods often.  MIL said that she checked the bacon one time and it said it was not cured which I believe is done to most bacon you buy at the grocery store.  So the gist of that is you just never know what Whole Foods may or may not carry.  Also, if you eat out and are unsure of whether cheese is pasteurized or not, ask.  They will go and ask the cook if it is or not.  I read somewhere that restaurants can get away with not disclosing if their products are pasteurized or not since they do not manufacture the product.  They just use it.
  • At restaurants, instead of asking if it's Pasteurized, ask if it's imported.  If yes, just say no.  Better safe than sorry.

  • I don't usually ask the servers b/c, even though I have waited tables in my time, I don't always trust them to ask the chef.

One thing to be conscious of is the local food movement -- lots of restaurants here are using locally grown food and that can include locally produced goat cheese.  So, I will buy it when I can see for myself that it's pasteurized, but wouldn't get it at the farmers market or a restaurant, just to be safe.  But again, that's what's trendy here in Austin right now.

Good luck and yay for goat cheese. Big Smile

  • Just pay attention in stores like Trader Joes, Henrys, and Fresh n' Easy.  They have cheese, juice, etc which is unpasturized, but it will say it on the label.

  • My husband is a Chef and he says I should be careful of blue cheeses, like Stiltons. Some of the cheeses he has on his menu are European and unpasteurized.

Off topic, he also says most Caesar dressings these days in restaurants are safe.  If you eat at a chain restaurant chances are the caesar dressing is premade and doesn't have any raw egg in it.  This made me very happy b/c I love caesar salads!

  • you can eat it as long as you dont have a lot, and all the time... moderation
  • I have them all the time...don't worry..
