Non Diaper-Pail Users

Please keep me from giving up and accepting the free Diaper Genie II my SIL has offered me. I hate those bastards.

However, my search for a fairly small step trash can with an actual rubber seal is apparently not going to turn up anything useful. If you have one, could you please tell me where it came from? I'd be willing to pay much more than I originally planned for it. Like, up to $50 or so.

Um, yeah. The Bump be too crazy for pics of my kid.

  • Have you tried putting the poopy diapers in a ziploc baggy before tossing them? We do, and there's absolutely ZERO smell coming from the trash.

  • I used to use a stainless steel trash can with the rubber seal as you described.  It was fine when DD was an infant and her poop didn't smell all that bad.  But then once she started solids, oh forget it!  It smelled awful!  We use the diaper genie II now and it's the best thing ever!  It doesn't take up much room, super easy to empty/change liner, and best of all, no odor!  In the beginning, I refused to use a diaper pail.  Oh how I've changed my tune...
  • We use the Safety 1st diaper pail.  It doesn't have a rubber seal, but we line it with the plastic grocery bags and take it out every evening.  It also has a compartment at the top for a deodorizing disc.  Got it at BRU.
  • I was talking to the maintenance guy where I live and he told me to throw them in the doggy garbage.  He said that another mother does this with her babies diapers and he doesnt mind, because he already has to change the garbage everyday anyways.  I havent done that yet, because I feel embarrassed  but I think I will eventually give in and throw them there.
  • I just hang one of those dirty diaper dispensers from the changing table and toss it in the trash. The bags are little and theyre scented. I'll try and find one to link.

the bags look similar to this:

Doesn't this cost a lot more than just buying a diaper genie and the bags? Also, it seems so wasteful and like a pain.

  • Instead of ziplocs.....I've actually been using wal-mart plastic bags and tying them up in there and chunking them in the trash. We have a billion of those bags b/c we've been saving them forever but there isn't much of a recyling program here. It works for us so far.

I would have thought that, too. Thanks for the suggestions...since it's free, I may just end up with the stupid Diaper Genie.

  • We just use a mini step trash can we got at Target for like $30.  I don't even think it has the rubber seal.  My LO's been on solids for almost two months and we only empty every couple of days and honestly it does not stink.  I have the most sensitive nose and it sits right inside the door of her room and I've never smelled it.  I hate diaper genies too and refused to go that route and this has worked perfect for us.  We don't even line the pail or anything, and I certaintly don't wrap up every diaper individually, that does sound like a pain.  We do wash the pail out every once in awhile.  You can barely see it in the bottom left hand corner of this pic in her nursery.  Hope this helps!

  • For her pee diapers I just toss them in a small can lined with grocery bags.  It gets taken out nightly or the next morning like the regular trash.  I do put the poopy ones (only 1 a day or every other day) in a grocery bag and tie it up good before it goes in the can.  Once she starts on solids I may try something else if the grocery bags don't hold in the smell.  We are in and out so often I may just take them out each time.  With one of my other kids I would put poopy diapers in a grocery bag and twist it then fold it over the diaper again before I tied it.  Worked really well, never smelled it in the house.
