TTC After a Loss

I think my beagle is anti-baby!

I'm convinced Bailey my beagle is trying to be our new birth control!

Back story:  I have had Bailey since he was 8 w/o, he is now 14 y/o.  He has always been my devil dog. He knows how to open cages (I tried crating him and finally I tried a padlock and the only day I did this I came home to find a metal crate with the bars broken open, blood on the floor and B sitting on the sofa), sliding glass doors and fridges (we still have to bungee cord our fridge, 6 months ago I forgot and I came home to a 1/2 eaten pot roast lying in the hall and the top of the butter container off and all the butter gone!).  When I do home visits for the beagle rescue I volunteer for, I use him as my example of what beagles are capable of doing!

So this week we are fwp, we can't put B outside because once he wants to come in, the whole neighborhood knows.  So on Monday we shut the door, B sat outside the door the entire time barking, the entire time, it was so annoying.  Anyone familiar with a beagle bark?  Then last night when we went to bed B was in the bed so I said whatever.  Well the quick version is B gets up from where he's lying and tries crawling in-between H's legs to snuggle up to where I am!  And then he would not move!  I'm trying to move him with my foot and he starts barking at me, just killed everything.  So this morning, we shut the door and dealt with him barking non-stop.  Seriously, what is going on with this dog?

  • Yikes!  Bailey must need a LOT of attention!  Porkchop would probably be like that if he had more energy.  Instead he'll bark a few times because he wants something, then lay down and fall asleep because that took it all out of him.  Plus, H doesn't allow any dogs on the furniture.  Maybe you can keep him occupied with some treats in a Kong while you and H are getting down to business?

  • We have tried the kong thing, it's such a pain because if we give one dog a kong we have to give the other 3 kongs and right now the vet wants Bailey to lose weight because he has gained some since he has gotten older and he does not get much exercise anymore...well honestly he gets none.  I think the dog just wants to spite me.

  • We have a puggle, so half beagle and she does the same thing.  We do the peanut butter Kong ball to keep her busy.  Unfortunately, she is a pretty quick eater of the PB and she comes and barks and scratches.  Lately, we wait until she is laying outside and looks like she isn't ready to come in for awhile.  mostly, we just have to do quicky sex. Not very satisfying, but I suppose it will get the job done. Sucks for me though.
  • I see the annoyance of not wanted to give all the dogs Kongs.  But as for the weight thing, IMO at 14 y/o a dog has put in his/her dues and deserves a few extra treats.  Maybe some healthy treats and only during FWP time?

  • I have a beagle so I not one little word of this story surprises me! We got him when he was a/b a year old and it took a LOT of training b/c of their stubborn streak (he was housebroken and could sit but that's a/b it). When my hubby and I kick him out he knows the drill and goes and either sleeps down on his chair or down the hall in the other bedroom until we're done and then he comes up in our bed to sleep... after 3 years he finally knows his place Indifferent

  • Thank goodness ours is fine with her crate.  She's about 7 months old and will just go to sleep.  If we get to noisy then I sometimes hear her move around, but that's about it.  The boxer has also learned after a year to just go lay down and not try to figure out what's going on.  At first she would come put her nose on the bed and try to watch - which got her kicked out of the room.
