1st Trimester

question about high blood pressure...(kinda long)

So, I had a Dr.'s appointment yesterday and my blood pressure measured normal...but it was on the high end of normal.  I meant to ask my Dr. about it but there was a bit of a wait between meeting with the lady who took my weight and blood pressure and then actually getting to see the Dr. and by the time the Dr. came in we started talking about something else and I totally forgot.  Nothing was said to lead me to beleive that I should be worried about my blood pressure but because I'm still only in the first trimester, I'm concerned about it going up as I get further along.  Does anyone know what happens if I were to get high blood pressure later in the pregnancy?  Do they have ways of treating it or is it most likely going to be bed rest for me? I love my Dr. and staff and I am fully confident in their competence but it just kinda got me thinking...

I will definitely bring it up at my next appointment but until then I would be grateful to anyone who can share their experience with this or offer some insight as to what may happen.  This dosen't seem important enough to call and bug my Dr.'s office about prior to my next appointment.  Thanks in advance!

Re: question about high blood pressure...(kinda long)

  • Bedrest and medications are both commonly used. There are usually a lot of posts on the high risk board, if you're interested.

One of my friends always had to have her BP checked *after* hearing the heartbeat at her appointments, because her BP was always a lot higher beforehand, not knowing if things were OK. (She lost her previous pregnancy.)

  • There is high blood pressure medication your dr. can prescribe.  I had to get growth ultrasounds during my last pregnancy.  I had PIH.  I did have to be on bed rest for a week but then it went down.    Just keep an eye on it.

  • At my last appt my BP was 135/90.  I have to go in on Monday and have it checked again.  My doctor is going to keep a close eye on it, but hasn't mentioned anything specific that would be done.

  • Normal is normal no matter where it is on the spectrum.  As long as it's not high then I wouldn't worry for now.  Should you cross over, they can put you on meds if they feel it necessary, but bedrest would be in your future (my sister was supposed to be on bed rest starting in her 6th month but her BP was doing so well they nixed it unless it became a problem).
  • I had pregnancy induced hypertension with both my last two pregnancies. My bp went up in the 3 tri both times and I was put on moderate bedrest, weekly bp checks and several 24 urine tests (to watch for pre-e which hypertension is a big sympton of). My high blood pressure was some people's normal since I normally run low. My OB said that she was watching that my bottom number went up over 15 points. I was induced at 38 weeks with both girls.

I will most likely be high risk this pregnancy as well (OB already said) and I will be watched closely once I'm in the 2nd tri.

  • I started getting higher readings at my 13 week appointment.  It's been creeping up every since.  I've had a pretty normal pregnancy otherwise.  However now I'm being monitored more closely (weekly appointments) and am on modified bed rest.

  • I had high blood pressure before getting pregnant and was placed on medicine in case i did become pregnant. Im on labetalol 100 mg 2x a day. Its doing a great job of helping keep my bp where it should be
  • Thanks to everyone for all the input!!
