Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

help me! what kids food to serve?

We are having Asher dedicated at church on Sunday and having people over for lunch afterwards.  We are serving Chinese Chicken Salad, fruit, rolls for everyone.  In all the years we've had lunch/dinners for things like this, we've never had kids' food but I feel like we should with this menu.  I know my kid won't eat chinese chicken salad...

So I'm thinking simple: maybe pb&j triangles (and/or turkey sandwiches cut into triangles?), string cheese and manadrin orange slices (in serving-size cups).  We are only having 10 or so kids, mostly toddler/preschool age.  Should we also have those horizon milk drinks that Starbucks sells?

What do you think of those kid options?  Any other ideas?

  • Might want to stay away from PB unless you know that no one is allergic.

Ditto. I'm paranoid because Jo is allergic, but maybe cucumber and cream cheese sandwiches? tomato & cheese? red pepper & avocado?

Sounds like a good menu to me. I can't believe you are entertaining so soon after having your second. You're superhuman.

  • What you have listed for kids sounds perfect. The only thing I could add would be macaroni and cheese. Stoffers makes big trays of it, or you could cook up a double batch of We also leave out bowls of goldfish and animal crackers for apps. Kraft. We do these for all our parties and they are a huge hit with kids and adults.

even if we offer turkey also?  i'm like 99.9% sure that no one is allergic but that .1% is the reason I was thinking turkey also.

LOL - i'm really not superhuman.  We are having it at my parents' house and my mom is doing most of it.  We had Caleb's dedication when he was just 9 days old and again had the lunch at my parents.  I just showed up, that's it. haha!

  • For milk, unless you think you're guests are going to want organic I would just go to Safeway and get some of the individual serving sizes of milk( like they serve at schools) and some straws, if you open it just enough to stick the straw in it's the same.  With kids that age I would only serve PB&J if you know parents have introduced it.  Our pedi recommends not until 3 so while I would certainly feel like it was my job to keep an eye on my kid it would make me a bit more stressed feeling like I had to make sure he didn't take someone else's PB&J.

One thing I like for little kids it to cut chicken into strips, coat in breadcrumbs and parm(or whatever cheese you've got) and bake.  Maybe little mac and cheese cups (I love the Trader Joes Mac and Cheese).  You could do fuit cabobs, or anything on a skewer they would find fun.  Basic cheese and crackers, my toddlers loves crackers and cheese.

  • Finger foods are great for little ones...  How about quesadilla, grilled cheese sandwiches, or chicken nuggets?  String cheese and ritz crackers are usually a hit as well.

Horizon milk and Juicy Juice juice boxes are great drink options.

  • Thanks everyone!  I will stay away from pb&j.  I like the mac&cheese idea too!
