2nd Trimester

Wondering if anyone has used or is going to use....

I was looking this morning on Target.com and I founf an amazing car seat. It us rgw Britax marathon. It is pricey but I dont think that buying an actual infant car seat and then the larger one is a smart investment. This one is usable from 5-40 lbs I believe so it will get a lot of use out of it. Anyways I was wondering if anyone was consedering this or has used this. Please let me know!!!

  • You can probably get a lot of feedback on this on the toddlers 12-24 board.

A lot of us over there use the Evenflo Triumph Advance, which is just as safe and way less expensive.

  • we're getting one.  I'm still going back and forth on the infant seat issue... right now, we're not planning on getting an infant seat, and using a sling/ soft carrier with the Britax instead.

  • I'm not entirely sure what you're asking here. ?Are you asking about skipping the infant seat entirely? ?I don't think that's a bad idea at all. ?We NEVER carried DS around in the infant seat- it's bulky and heavy. ?We didn't do the travel system either, so there wasn't much use for the infant seat. ?If I had it to do over, I would have put him directly into the Britax Boulevard we bought around 4 months. ?With #2 we'll probably have to use the infant seat (since I'll have DS to manage I may need to keep the baby in the infant seat sometimes) but in your case, I'd just use the Britax seat.

  • It has great ratings from what I heard, but Baby Bargains recommends getting an infant car seat because the convertables have to fit a whole range of babies, so it's not going to be as safe for an infant. We registered for both an infant and a convertible for this reason. I rather spend the money and insure safety than try to compromise in this area. That being said, again the Marathon got great ratings as well for being a convertable.

  • The Britax convertible car seats get AMAZING reviews.  We will definitely be getting a Britax (probably the Roundabout or the Marathon) when LO outgrows his infant seat.

Keep in mind that while you can use convertible seats from infancy, you loose the functionality of being able to easily get LO in and out of the car - particulary if he/she is sleeping.

A lot of people find that functionality alone worth the cost of a $100ish infant seat for the first several months.

  • We have both the infant seat and a convertible seat which we got later on. Having the infant seat was extremely helpful especially since it was cold when DS was born. Also, when he fell asleep in the car we could take the infant seat out without waking him. IMO, the infant seat is well worth it!?

We got a travel system for a shower gift and just bought the convertible when the time came. ?

  • I would absolutely get an infant seat where I am... I don't know where you are, but if it's going to be super cold in the winter I would say dont skip the infant seat... if it isnt, get a good wrap/sling

I have the britax and love it but I did use an infant seat until he was 6 months or so.  Just remember the downfall is if the baby is sleeping and you need to transfer out of britax.....they will prob wake up.  They won't in an infant seat because you can take it right out without transferring baby.

  • We have a Britax marathon and love it, but I would never skip using the infant seat. It is just so easy when they are little.
  • I haven't but have always heard rave reviews about the Britax seats.  If we didn't have to buy so many car seats then I would have probably gotten the Britax.

One really nice thing to consider about having an infant seat though is that when LO falls asleep in their car seat then you don't have to disturb them to take them inside.  DD has always been really great about falling asleep while we are in the car and it has been wonderful to not have to wake her up when I need to go into a store or in the house, etc.  For that convenience factor alone it was definitely worth us having an infant seat!

  • I wouldn't feel terribly comfortable with my newborn sitting quite as upright as most convertibles seat are. Infant seats seem to cradle the young infants a little better, imo.

And I always found the carrier to be very convenient.

  • I use a Britax Decathalon for my daughter and we bought 2, so I already have one for this baby too.  BUT, I really liked using an infant seat bc it is postitioned perfectly for them to sleep comfortably in the car and it is soooooooooooooo much easier to take them out to dinner and what not in the infant seat instead of waking them and removing them from the Britax.  So I will be using an infant seat and transitioning to the Britax around 20lbs or so.
  • I think you might regret not having an infant carrier.  Very convenient when baby is sleeping or in cold weather if you live where it's cold.  I don't have a Britax carseat at all because Ithink they are ridiculously over-priced, but I'd go for something that goes up to 65lbs over 40lbs.  My best friend has a 3 year old who is under the 40lb limit, but the straps are getting too low, and she doesn't feel a booster is safe enough, so she has to buy another carseat so her DD will be in a five point harness seat.

  • I'd get it for later or you could get the Evenflo Triumph which actually is rated higher than the Britax and is more reasonably priced .  IMO the infant seat was a life safer for the first 6-8 months of his life.  We could put him in the car and take him out without disturbing his sleep, we could switch cars without problem (key when both are working and splitting drop off/pick up), and just the portability of bringing him into a store or restaurant without having to take a stroller, etc.

ETA: I also agree with pp who said that if you live in cold, the infant seat is well worth it.

  • I spoke with my OB and he said you don't need both as long as the convertible will recline. We are getting both for the convienence of it. The infant car seat pops in and out so I won't have to wake her up everytime Ig o somewhere and it fits in stroller. It is a huge money save to only buy the one though.

We did this with DD, and there were no issues of her waking up when transferring from car seat to the carrier or stroller.  We'll do the same with the baby.

You have to consider if you want the convienence of the infant seat.  I knew I wasn't going to carry an infant seat around b/c that thing is heavy, so there's no convienence for me.

  • So after much delibration I think I am going to go with both. One for later and the infant for earlier. Thanks all for the advice!!!
