(When) should I take her to the doctor?

DD was running a temp of about 100.6 yesterday. This morning it was 101.9.  She's a little clingy, but otherwise in a good mood. Sleeping a lot. Temp is responding to Tylenol.

I don't know if I should take her in, or if I am just going to be told "it's a virus and there's nothing we can do". (Which is what I was told pretty much every time I have ever taken one of the kids in.)

Re: (When) should I take her to the doctor?

  • if its just a fever and no other symptoms (throwing up, diareah, etc) I'd wait....even with throwing up and diareah, I'd probably wait, because I've also ALWAYS been told "virus, give it time" and sent on our way with the $100 bill.

  • Fever controlled by tylenol = generally, they'll tell you it's just a virus.  I'd wait and see unless she can't hold anything down, or is having severe diarrhea or not peeing enough.

  • I wouldn't take her just yet since her mood is fine.
  • I would wait.  If the temp goes above 104 and she is refusing to eat & drink and is inconsoleable then I would take her in.

  • Right now it just sounds like she's running just a slight fever and since it is responding to the Tylenol I would probably wait it out.  If the fever gets worse, starts to not respond to medicine, or you see her behavior changing then you could give the ped office a call.

Ditto and add if she isn't consolable to that as well.   If you can't calm her or comfort her, I have found that when I my kids are like that 9/10 they have an ear infection.

I hope she feels better soon.

  • My dr always asks me if the child is back to being happy once the tylenol kicks in. I usually call just in case, wait three days and if he/they still have a fever go see the dr. unless they get worse during those three days.
  • Thanks, gals.

My kids are so rarely sick that I never know when it's time to go to the doc.

  • I'd give it about 3 days and if it's not getting better then to call.  If it's getting better then I'd just let it go.
