1st Trimester

Need help dealing with alcohol centered situations-ARGH!

let me preface this by saying the sales reps in my company drink alot!!  I am out of town at our company sales meeting, and have had to 'pretend' to drink for the past 2 days around my co workers (all male keep in mind)!  I ordered several cranberries w/splash of soda (to look like vodka) at our event last night.  I had to 'pretend' to sip on red wine on Sunday night...  A couple of guys asked why I wasn't drinking and gave me a hard time (they know I normally drink).  I think one of them is totally catching on.  We just wrapped up an afternoon meeting, and a cooler of beer and wine was rolled in--I literally bolted from the room and said I am 'going to workout' so I can't drink!  I have to go out to a very formal dinner in a few hours with all of these guys, and it will be a dead giveaway if I don't drink at dinner.  Our manager always orders very expensive, rare wines at our formal dinners, and it will be considered rude if I don't partake--how in the heck am I going to pull this off???

I absolutely do not want anyone I work with knowing I am preggo at this point...  This sucks.

  • you are on antibiotics due to a sinus infection and can't drink.  you are hungover from last night.  you are on a diet and no alcohol allowed.

  • Maybe say wine has been making you sick and then order something that looks like a mixed drink but isn't. ?Like tonic water with lime or a virgin margarita.

  • Wine, especially Red wine gives many people migranes. You can say you've been experiencing this lately and don't want to risk it.  Good Luck!
  •  Funny to hear that someone is having the same problem that I am!

Pull the waiter to the side while at dinner... slip him/her $10 tell him/her that you are not drinking but want to look like you are... so can s/he please put some prune juice / white apple juice in a wine glass for you and serve it to you?  ; )

Also, you will "order" vodka tonics from her/him but want sparkling water w/ fruit.  wink wink.

I have been doing this like crazy w/ my book club (we dine out) my co-workers etc.  It is too much of a limelight if I don't drink!  I am only 7 wks and don't plan on sharing the news for as long as I can, especially at work.

My brother is also getting married in 3 weeks and I don't want to announce before, b/c our mother will turn HIS wedding into her only daughter is having her first baby event.  (we all live far from each other and won't see each other until then.) Seriously.  If I ever wanted to ruin my SIL's wedding all I would have to do is announce now.  So, I am drinking sparkling water in my glass w/ the help of the waitstaff!

  • Maybe tell them you are on a diet? Have half a glass? Find one person you can trust and have them drink it for you?
  • Wow, what kind of a job do you have?! Partying with your co-workers - wining and dining!  Sounds fun (if you're not pregnant, lol).

These guys sound like immature jerks.  I bet you're worried that they'll give you a hard time about being pregnant, too.  Maybe you should consider finding a new job??  With more supportive co-workers...

You'll have to decide how important hiding this is to you.  You will probably have to lie your face off and even then, if you're not very convincing, people may figure it out.  At some point, I bet you're going to get sick of jumping through hoops.

(If it makes you feel any better about telling them the truth, when my husband told his dumb drinking buddies, they didn't tease him or anything.  They just shrugged and said "cool" and that was that!)

  • You could use the CathyMD, I'm on a "cleanse" excuse...  or I also like the diet excuse or antibiotics excuse...take your pick, just make sure to stick with one!

Why would your husband's drinking buddies give him a hard time because you can't drink?

  • Update:  I took one of the first poster's advice and told one of my co workers (and swore them to secrecy!).  He sneaky drank my champage and wine for me!

Just to clarify, the guys I work with are awesome and not jerks.  I work in sales and at out of town national meetings, people drink alot.  Alot of the women in my company have kids, and it's a very family friendly corporation for the most part!  I am only 8 wks along and haven't told my friends, let alone co workers.  I know my boss and co workers will be very supportive when we share our news, but I don't want to do so until I am well into my 2nd trimester just in case I miscarry or have complications.  I am usually up for letting loose and drinking as well, so it's pretty obvious if I just sit there like a bump on a log chugging water:)

    Thanks for the ideas ladies!
