Baby Names

Do you think it matters if...

Our last name is two syllables and rhymes with Figure.

Where we are people pronounce it ending in more of a "a" sound rather than an "er" sound.

There are a lot of two syllable names that end in "a' that I love:

Anna, Leah, Layla, Mia,....you get the idea.

I just don't think these names sound great withour last name eg. Anna Figure.

Should I abandon these names? It would help cut down ideas, I suppose?

Are longer names like Amelia, Rebecca a better fit? Or should we steer away from al names that end in "a"?

Thoughts?

Thanks

  • I'm of the school of thought that most people won't go around saying your child's full name all the time. Yes, there is role call in school, public announcements, legal documents, etc. But if you really like a name I say go for it.

I'd probably pick the longer syllable names personally.

  • Sounds fine. Anna and Leah are lovely names. I love Rebecca too.
  • I think it's good to consider 'the whole package' -- how well all the parts of a name flow together. That being said, I don't think you need to nix your favorite name just because it doesn't have perfect rhythm.

I have a common last name that... well... rhymes with "myth". Our name choices are Neil and Molly. It sounds a little peanut-butter-and-jelly, perhaps, but we simply love those names. Not ideal meter, but those names make us smile.

  • I don't have a problem w/ both names ending in A, but I do think a longer name would be better than the 2 syllable names.

  • I don't think it matters at all.  I think it sounds nice.
  • Sounds fine. I love Anna and Leah!
