Breastfeeding

What does this mean...

I feed LO for 35-45 min, sometimes he takes both boobs, sometimes not. Then he's starving again in another 1/2 to an hour!  He's a big kid, but this is killing me...we're trying to work out latch issues too.

  • Newborns need to feed constantly, it helps you establish your supply.  Plus, they do hit growth spurts at a week, two weeks, one month, two months etc.

  • My little girl did the same. Very big girl at birth (9lbs 11oz) and I started formula feeding around 5 days old and got a pump. I'm trying to make enough for her but so far it's not happening. She can eat 4+oz each sitting and I can only produce maybe 1 oz each time I pump. I'm trying some adivce from others (oatmeal, blessed thisle & fenugreek). I think I'll go out tomorrow and pick these things up, if I can find them...Good luck to you.

  • That's normal.  DD nursed every 1-1.5 hours for the first couple months.  She'd nurse usually 30 minutes each time, so I got 30-60 minutes before she wanted to nurse again.

Completely normal.  They nurse every 2-3 hours from the start of BFing and if they nurse for 1.5 hours, that means 30 minutes til the next meal.  Keep in there, it gets better.  6 glorious weeks is when most moms feel like they got it:)  I did it, and so can you:)

  • Completely normal. Just keep putting him on the boob so your supply regulates to his need and make sure you're using lanolin on your nips so he doesn't tear them all up. GL!

This.  If possible, try to limit any formula or pumping so your body can meet the demand of your LO.  If you are supplementing your body doesn't know that the baby is eating and won't produce as much.  They eat A LOT and very often in the beginning, but it's all worth it when your supply catches up to their demand in the next couple of weeks.
