Sudden fear of the bath

My son who has always loved taking baths seems to be afraid of it the last few nights.  We were still using the little inflatable tub and tried to switch to the big tub but he started screaming and wouldn't even sit down.  We switched back to the inflatable tub and he now he won't go in that one either.

Any advice on how to get him back in the tub?

Re: Sudden fear of the bath

  • This exact thing happened to my son at about 14 months!  A few things helped- - first, we tried showers, which he really liked!  My husband got in there with him and he liked it much better.  We did have to buy him a plastic step stool to sit on while he's in the shower.  When we realized the step stool worked in the shower, we thought we'd give him a bath and put the step stool in there- sure enough it worked!  We continued to give him baths and he'd just sit on the step stool.  Eventually, he started making his way off of it and sitting back in the tub but we still have it in there in case he feels like he wants to sit out of the water.  Just some ideas that worked for us!

  • have you tried bath crayons or tablets that color the water? You can get both in the cosmetics section at walmart.
  • We went through standing up in the tub phase for a couple of months.  It was horrible to say the least.  Good news is that he's back to loving the water (swimming pools and the tub)!  It will pass with time.
  • Thanks for the tips, we're going to try to get some new bath toys and see how it goes!
