Babies: 0 - 3 Months

working moms: morning routine?

I am trying to figure out how on earth we are going to get out of the house in the morning. My LO is a terrible sleeper and currently is still sleeping on me, exclusively- so I have this added complication to getting up & out in the AM. (Ideally I would like to shower, etc. before I get him up, since it will be so early- but that seems impossible right now)

My DH and I will be leaving at around the same time, and generally speaking, DH will be dropping DS off at the babysitter's in the morning. Drop off will happen around 7am.

So my question is: What is your morning like? How long are you up, etc? What am I forgetting?

I should add that I am BFing but planning to supplement with formula since it seems highly unlikely I will be able to completely keep up with DS pumping.

TIA!

  • I'd like to hear peoples answers because I currently can show up to work whenever I want so I just rough out my mornings depending how he's sleeping but I'm changing jobs in the next 4 weeks so that'll have to change and I would like ideas/examples to base my plan on.

  • I don't have to be at work until 9:15. But, here is my schedule:

6 a.m.: feed DD in bed, then give her to DH. I go back to sleep. He changes her and dresses her for the day, plays with her and puts her in her swing where she normally takes a nap. He gets ready for work.

8 a.m.: I wake up. I feed DD again, put her in her exersaucer to play. Then I run to take a shower and get ready for work.

8:45 a.m.: I try to pump before going to work. (If I don't then I wait until I get to work.)

9 a.m.: walk nextdoor to the sitter who keeps DD during the day. I do the handoff and jump in the car to go to work.

  • On most days, I get up at 5:15.  If DD is still sleeping, I shower and do as much "primping" as possible until she wakes up.  (But I don't get dressed until just before I leave the house.  I only had to get puked on twice before I learned that trick!)  When she wakes, I feed and dress her, and then put her in her swing, bumbo, or bouncy chair and keep her entertained by talking to her while I do my makeup, pack for the day, etc.  I do all the bottle preparation and such the night before.  I am usually able to leave the house by 7:15.  DD sleeps in her crib but wakes often (4 month wakeful, I think), and I'm exhausted, but I'm doing the best I can and getting paid.  As far as BFing/formula goes, I found that pumping 3x per day wasn't reasonable for me, so I now nurse in the morning, pump at lunch, and nurse at night.  She gets two bottles of BM (which comes from my lunch time pumping -- I usually get 7-8 oz) and two bottles of formula while I'm at work.  I'm definitely producing less and sometimes I have to give her a bottle of formula when I'm home with her at night, but overall, it's been working for us!

Most importantly, good luck to you!  It's not easy, but it gets better and you'll appreciate your time with your LO so much more!

  • DH and I take turns.  I wake up at 5:30 and begin getting myself ready (he is on baby duty in case LO wakes up during that time.  Then at 6:45, he begins getting ready and then I am on baby duty in case LO wakes up during that time.  If 7:15am rolls around and DD still isn't awake and/or fed yet, I wake her up and get her lotioned, dressed and fed (if not already fed for the morning.. in that case I won't wake her up until 7:30am) and then all 3 of us are ready to go out the door by 8:00am!

  • We are still working out the timing since DD can't decide what time she's going to wake up for the day, but ideally:

5:45 - up and shower, dry hair, brush teeth
    6:30 - nurse DD
    6:45 - pump
7:00 - prepare bottles/wash pump parts/pack the bag for daycare
    7:15 - leave house

    Meanwhile, DH:
6:30 - up and shower, get ready
6:45 - play with DD/get her changed and dressed
    7:15 - leave house

  • I guess my routine starts in the evening... I get a bath with DS.  Well... I get into the tub with him and bathe him and then hand him off to DH.  I get my shower while DH gets him ready for bed.  In the AM, I get up around 5 and start getting ready for work.  Wet my hair, dry it, straighten it, etc.  DS wakes up anywhere between 5:30 and 6:15 (sometimes we have to wake him!).  DH feeds DS while I'm getting ready for work/getting DS's things together for the sitter.  We're out the door by 7 so I can drop him off at the sitter's at 7:30.  SOMETIMES I sleep until 6... those are ponytail days.  :)  The shower at night is key though.
  • I have to be at work at 7 am and I leave at 6:20am.  DD sleeps in bed with us, and my morning schedule varies depending on when she wakes up.  I get up at 5:15 and start getting ready, if I have time I will take a shower before DD wakes up.  If she wakes up early, I feed her then put her back to bed and shower.  I finish getting ready and have fed her by 6:10am.  Then I change her and get her dressed.  My mom watches her at our house, so I just have to bring her to my mom.  Then I get all my stuff together and go to work!

  • 5:15 wake and pump one side

5:30 shower, get dressed, make-up, and hair

6:10 Feed DD off un-pumped side

6:30 pack up lunch, pump, etc. for day

    6:40 leave

All this time I hope that she doesn't wake up and throw me totally off schedule!

  • You ladies make this all sound possible. Not that I am looking forward to it, but at least hopefully we will make it work!

(Or I will quit my job... j/k. I wish!)

  • Shower and pack diaper bag the night before!

    ME:

6:15- Wake and fix hair/get ready as much as possible

    6:30- Take over feeding/dressing DS

    7:00- Out the door

    7:15- Drop off at sitter

    8:00- WORK

    DH:

6:15- Wake DS and begin feeding

    6:30- Get ready

     7:15- Out the door

Some days DH finished the feed giving me more time to get ready, other days we take turns since I have to leave earlier to get DS to babysitter
