Did you buy a car seat bag for air travel?

Did you get a carseat bag for your carseat when you traveled by air?  If you didn't did you carseat get really dirty/damaged?  I'm thinking I need a cover because I'm nervous that without it the infant carrier and the base could be separated and possibly lost.

If you bought one, which one did you buy.  They all seem to have mixed reviews.

I could be over thinking this too much....but that's what I do.

  • I didn't take my car seat when we traveled, but I will next time b/c rental car seats are AWFUL!  My friend used a backpack-style thing to carry hers around. But I don't know about a bag......

Let me know how it works for you!

  • I didn't buy one.  On the way out, Delta gave me a thick plastic bag to use and it worked great.  On the way back, they were out of bags, but nothing happened to the carseat at all.  I didn't bring the base, though (DH drove so he brought it with him).

  • Absolutely, buy a cover and gate check your seat.  Do not check it with your luggage.  They are so rough on car seats.  Plus, if there is an empty seat available on your flight they have to let you use your carseat.  Children are sooooo much safer in their car seats on a plane.  See this thread.  Also, this is the car seat bag I have.  In an emergency, I had to check my seat as we had to fly last minute, and could only get 2 seats.  Even then, the bag was torn and it is a thick heavy bag.  It's great quality, just shows what your seat goes through.

  • maybe a garbage bag? or two garbage bags for extra protection? I haven't done this before; I'm just brainstorming.
  • I didn't take my base.  We never used it when we travelled.  Thanks for this post though, it reminded me I need to look into a bag for our convertible seat.
  • You definitely need a bag.  We gate checked on the way there, and it rained, so our bag was soaked but our carseat was dry thank goodness.  We checked the carseat on the way back, and we noticed another person had their carseat in a clear plastic bag from Air Tran.  So the airlines will supply you with one, I think.

    We bought this one: https://www.amazon.com/Childress-Gate-Check-Bag-Seats/dp/B000RRD7UG/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=baby-products&qid=1250637844&sr=8-1

It was fine, but a little cumbersome to carry through the airport.

They hand out plastic bags at Continental (or at least they are supposed to).  They didn't on our way back and some dumbass ripped our headrest.  They only let us take our carseat on the plane because it has faa approval stamped on the seat.

All 5 point harness seats, in the US are FAA approved.  Boosters are not, but if it has 5 point, all other seats are fine.
