Maiden name for middle name?

Is anyone planning on doing this?  DH had the idea last night and I think it might be growing on me.  My maiden name isn't a common first name but I think it might fit!

I don't have any brothers so my maiden name has "stopped"!

Re: Maiden name for middle name?

  • Our friends did this and I really like it!

  • My MN is a maiden name.

I wouldn't use my own maiden name since it's too "out there" but there are a lot of really great last names that make fabulous middle names!!

  • Lots of people do that. I'm not into it myself, but I can see why people like to. What is the name?

ETA: I thought you meant as a first name. I have seen that often, less for a middle name, but that makes sense, too.

  • Maiden name is Jardine (pronounced Jar-deen)...

It means garden and I think it might work for a girls middle name...what do you think?

  • I could see that working as a mn.  It's easy to say and has a nice meaning.  Plus I like the idea of using a mother's maiden name as a child's mn.  My maiden name (and my mom's maiden name) have also both "stopped" and I plan to use her maiden name as a mn if we have a boy (it's a common male first name).  I know a LOT of women who have used their maiden names for their children's middle names--I think it's a nice tradition.
  • I think your maiden name works really well as a middle name. ?I like the tradition of it- we gave DS my grandmother's maiden name and I love it.

  • We are doing this with #2. I also don't have any brothers (or sisters for that matter) who can pass the name Brady along. I am very excited and my parents are thrilled.
  • I like using family names of any kind for middle names. ?I think it is nice to have those family ties, without being stuck with a first name that might not be great.
  • I always dismissed the idea since my maiden name, Lauer, isn't easy to say and doesn't "go well" with a lot of names.  But, my Grandpa Lauer died last month and my dad was an only child.  So, it stops with me.  Got any good 1st names that go with Lauer?

Also- I'd probably laugh every time I had to use DD's 1st and mn and feel like I'm yelling at myself.  :)

  • I like the idea. My husban's middle name is his mom's maiden name.  It wouldn't work well for us, but yours sounds good for a girl.

  • I had always heard that it was traditional for your oldest child to have the mother's maiden name as his/her middle, so it's not weird at all to me; your name lends itself so well that I think it works perfectly.
  • My dad's side of this family does this often. I would like to do so as well, my maiden name is Clark which I would possibly use as a first name for a boy or a middle for a girl.
  • This is a tradition in my family.  My brother and all my male cousins have the maiden name as their middle name.  We are using my maiden name as a first name for a boy or otherwise I would do it as well.

  • I would have done it but my maiden name would never work as a first name.
  • my husband's middle name is his mother's maiden name. actually, we are wanting to continue to honor her, so it will be the 1st name of our son, if we have a boy.

  • We aren't doing that, but I like it when it's an obvious name. For example, my friend's maiden name is Emma and she is using it as a middle name for her DD. Another friend of mine is using her maiden name, Simon, for their DS.?
  • I like my maiden name, so we will most likely be using it as a MN whenever we have a boy.

  • I know lots of people (adults mostly) who have their mother's maiden name as their middle name. If I have a DS in the future I would definitely consider using my maiden name for his middle name, since I don't have any brothers.

  • it wouldnt work with my maiden name at all but i think your maiden name sounds really cute for a girls middle name.
  • I plan on doing this and think it's a great idea.  I live in the South and that is an especially popular tradition "down here."  Go for it!
  • I would but mine is a hard to pronounce French name. I am also the only person who would carry a name on but it just doesn't sound right to me. Instead we will use my grandfathers name, regardless of gender (Ray/Rae).

  • I generally love this idea.  Over the years, some of the coolest middle names I've heard of were maiden names.

My mn is Noel, which is my mom's maiden name, and if we have a girl, we're using it again as a mn and if we have a boy, we're using MIL's maiden name, which is Royal.  dh had to convince me of this, but it's really grown on me.

  • That is what we are planning to do.  I didn't change my last name when we got married, so this way our child will have a connection to both names.
