Adoption

Heart to Heart

Anyone use this agency or research them?

I like looking at their immediate situation on the web site (I hate that they charge more for their services for each "quarter" of the racial make-up though).

They state 8-10k for full medical. Does anyone know why they don't sign the e-mom up for medicaid or retroactive medicaid? Are they ethnically/morally/religiously/politically/legally against government insurance?

Re: Heart to Heart

  • Is there any reason for them to believe non-Medicaid prenatal care is better?

(I have my own suspicions about this, but have never been on Medicaid so can't substantiate).

I too am disgusted by "the darker the baby, the lower the adoption fee".  It seems to be on a global scale though. :(

I agree.  And while I don't agree with it-our agency did a good job of explaining why that is the case.  I'll C&P their explanation here.

"We do not ask for less money on our African American adoptions because these children are worth less as human beings. Because we often have a difficult time finding families for these precious children, we have lowered our fees to give families that otherwise would be unable to adopt the opportunity to give these children the gift of a family. These lower fees are set below a typical Caucasian adoption because we, as an agency absorbs some of the cost to make these situations more accessible to families on a tight adoption budget."

I completely know that the cost factor is a supply/demand issue. It irks me with H2H because they don't just do it straight up 'white'/'black' but rather 5k less for 1/4 black, 8k for 1/2 black.

Also, if you ask the agency to provide a itemization of the costs that they incur you will most likely find that THEY themselves are actually NOT aborbing ANY costs. They offer e-moms less living expenses - typically they cap it for e-moms on a sliding scale of how dark the baby will be. THAT is where the difference in cost generally comes from. Agencies also get subsidies from the government for AA babies - so they may waive some fees but they get it back from the govt.

Anyway .. that isn't the point of my post. Was more curious about the medical fees for this particular agency. Our agency told us that we could expect 8-10k in medical fees IF medicaid denied the e-mom but that rarely happens.

We will start the process next May/June. And hope to be parents by the end of next summer to #2. We love our agency and will most likely work with them again for #2 but I also like that H2H will let you play a role in selecting an e-mom and baby.

    You go girl!!

  • we used heart to heart and to answer your question most of the BM are on medicaid or medicare depending on their situation
  • We narrowed down to four or five agencies and H2H was one of the finalists. If we hadn't matched with Holden at his agency so quickly we probably would have signed on with them too.?

When we were in the hospital, the folks next to us were also adopting an infant through H2H. From what I heard in that hospital our agency and H2H did a lot adoptions there.

You know, I feel really stupid right now because we paid for the medical and I have idea why. Medicaid was not involved. We did have an induced labor so maybe that was the reason. Even with paying medical, our costs were cheaper than the other 25 or so cases we had seen before.

Our agency also posts their cases on their website, I think it is password protected, though.... To be honest as soon as I heard about H and his case I knew he was our son so I didn't ask too many questions about the medical. I did look at the itemized breakdown and it all felt very right to me. I should ask them that, though....?
