So remember my post about whether we were crazy to look for a house? If so, call the psych ward because we made an offer on one (our dream house pretty much but on a slightly smaller scale, and great price) and are supposed to close in October - eek!! Now, to find a sublet for our current place - fingers crossed.
Paranoid crazy that I am, my first thought was that we need home security/monitoring because we won't have the benefit of a locked entryway and anonymity in a large building that we've grown accustomed to in the city. As much as I hate living in the city and want to go to the burbs, I also haven't lived in the suburbs or in any non-communal environment (dorm, apartment building, condominium) since I was 17 years old and the idea of being in our own house with immediate access to us and being visible to strangers freaks me the F out.
So, does anyone have a home security system, and if so which one, and do you recommend it? I only know of ADT and Brinks (now Broadview) from their TV ads.
Re: NBR: House news and home security Q
Ack!! I'm so excited for you! If you feel comfortable, I'd love to see pictures
This is so great, and fingers will be crossed that you can find a sublet.
As for the home security, we actually used a local/ regional company and we're happy with them. That said, we didn't bother transferring our service when we moved into this house. . . I just wasn't convinced it did that much good, and it was a pita to remember to turn it off/ on. There are times when DH is out of town that it crosses my mind again, but I usually just rely on my dogs to be our body guards
(The one thing that *does* make me feel a lot better is having someone come to the house when we're oot for more than a weekend to turn the lights and blinds, check the mail, and etc.)
Congrats!
Congratulations! DH and I have a security system and I love it. I'm sure I'll love it even more once the baby is here. We have ours through Firstline Security. It's costs us $40 a month. You can get free or really cheap equipment. We didn't pay for unit or most of the scensors.

Congrats on the house!
We have gone back and forth on getting a home security system. My BIL is a police officer and basically said they usually aren't worth the spend. That being said, if I didn't have a dog, I'd have a security system. LOL
We have ADT and we like it. Just be sure to research and get the options you want. We nixed motion sensors because we have a cat, and DH preferred window opening sensors vs glass-break detectors (they can go off for reasons other than glass breaks, triggering a police visit and a lot of unnecessary stress). They also have a wireless version available.
Congrats on the house!
And just a thing about the 'burbs--it's likely VERY safe and will not be a problem once you get used to it. I bought a house in the burbs with hollow core doors as exterior doors (what were they thinking???). While I was getting them replaced (and the security system put in), I kept reminding myself that someone had lived in the house for 35 years with no problem.
Have fun! Show pix!
Congrats on the house, that's fantastic. In my last two houses (one was a row house, the other a single family home) and I used Brinks for both houses and really like their customer service.
GL
Congrats!! Can't wait to see pics of the house!!!
We had ADT in our old house and I was very happy with them. We have a local company in this house because the previous owner had already done some pretty extensive wiring with them.
Congrats on your house!
ADT had awful billing. They deducted a total of a couple THOUSAND dollars from my account because of duplicate billing, even though our first few months were supposed to be free because my H was deploying. I wrote them a letter revoking their authority to deduct money from my account, which they acknowledged, and then the following week they took more money! I wrote a letter to corporate and got it all straightened out within a month.
During the time I had ADT, I accidentally entered my PIN wrong and set off the alarm. I called the 800 number and told them to disregard, it wasn't an emergency, and the guy said they don't even get notified until TWO minutes had passed, just in case it was a false alarm. That really upset me...two minutes to notify ADT, then the time it takes them to call to confirm it's an emergency, then the time to dispatch the police and have them drive over....a robber could definitely be in and out in the time it takes to get the police there.
Brinks couldn't use cell phone backup in my area because we live in the middle of nowhere, but the customer service rep didn't mention that even though that was specifically what I signed up for and she even asked me for my zip code. I had the system installed and then started getting error codes on the display panel, so I called customer service and they said our house wasn't even being monitored. Then I got a bill. Um, for what??
I decided I'm more comfortable with a dog and a baseball bat.
you can do it!!!! don't have advice on security. we most likely won't get it. I can understand living out in the burbs is very different, but it is safe right?
congrats!!!
are you still going to jamaica for your friends wedding in Nov. ?was it jamaica? congrats on getting your dream house - great time to buy!!
