We are thinking of naming our daughter Sydney/Sidney, and neither my husband or I was aware that it was popular. Neither of us know anyone with this name.
Well, I was looking through the Baby Name Wizard book last night and saw it was #25 on their list of top/popular names.
For those of you that are around a lot of children, do you come across a lot Sydneys?
Re: Is this a common name for a girl?
So Tasty, So Yummy
Ditto
We've gone around and around with the idea of what names are too popular. We went back and looked at the top 20 names from the years we were born. The names that are in the top 10 are definitely the names where we had multiple people with those names in our class. The names in the top 20 were more likely we knew someone with that name, but not like there were a ton of them. So our rule of thumb is that we couldn't pick any name in the top 20, but #21 or lower was fair game. For DD, her name isn't even in the top 1000. For #2, our boy and girl names are both ranked in the 20s I think.
FWIW, there are no sydney's in DD's daycare class.
Thanks for the help ladies.
This name thing is driving me crazy!
This. I've known Sidney as the masculine and Sydney as the feminine.
Yes, as a former teacher, there were a lot of Sydney's around. And I hear it more and more it seems lately.
I've always liked the name, BTW.
I know of 2, one of which was just born 3 weeks ago.
I think it is common but not hugely popular. Check the social security site and see where they have it on the list. I used that site a lot when deciding on a name.
