Pregnant after a Loss

I hate my uncle. Now I'm hysterical.

We used to get along great, but (very long story) he got into hardcore conservative politics, which would be fine, except he has taken it to an extreme that you only see being mocked on television.  Anyway, I posted that I hope other people aren't going to see the huge rising costs for their healthcare, because I'm not sure how we can even justify keeping ours now on facebook.

He responded with a long diatribe about how I should be thankful that I live in a country where cancer mortality rates are so much lower than in countries with government health plans and that's worth the higher cost and I should be grateful.

I am grateful that people who can afford health insurance have better chances of survival.  But, and I'm not exaggerating, we would never be able to afford treatment.  Right now I feel like I have to choose between having groceries and having health insurance.  I'm one of those 50 million Americans that lays awake hoping we can afford healthcare soon.  Our income went down to a 1/4 of what me made last year in the last 3 months.  I thought we would recover and now I don't see how we ever will.  I feel like the worst person ever.  I used to believe that we would scrape by and things would be tough for a while, but there's no end in sight and now it's getting even worse.  And then to be told I should be grateful that I live in a country that I can't afford to live in anymore?  By someone who makes a 6 figure income, I can't stop sobbing.

  • Just to let you know, I completely agree with you.

On the other hand, I would never write something like that on FB unless I was prepared to get all sorts of comments back. If you don't want opposing opinions, I would seriously take it off.

  • I'm really sorry.  Some people just don't get it.  My husband is self employed so by the end of the year when our family expands, our health insurance is going to cost as much as our mortgage payment.  It is the most stressful thing to have to think about.
  • I'm so sorry you had to deal with that!
  • You know what though?  I'd rather have someone see how this is affecting a real person and endure it then to have to pretend everything is fine.

That's the real problem.  No one ever wants to own up to the reality of our situation.  Maybe if more people did, we could stop looking at this as some academic issue and realize the true crisis that is affecting our family members and friends.

Then go for it! Be the living example and good luck!

  • I agree with you completely.  I am sorry your uncle had to post such comments on FB.

  • I agree, but I would never put it on facebook because I  know many people who would counter it.

  • I totally agree with you and I'm sorry your uncle upset you. However, you did put it out there and it's a subject that's a bit of a hot button issue right now so eventually someone would've responded negatively. I'm sorry he upset you so much.
  • I completely agree with you, too. I used to be strict Republican, but over the last few years, I just got turned off by their politics, bitterness and behavior - including many of my own friends.  Health care should be a human right, in my opinion, but we've turned it into a business and religious platform instead.  It's disgusting.  My father is paralyzed from Multiple Sclerosis, and it's sad that he has to travel to Costa Rica for stem cell treatment.  My mom's insurance deductible (she's self-employed) is $5000.  My sister graduated from college and is working a temp job due to the economy, so she has no health insurance.  My entire family is suffering.  It makes me sick.
  • It's unfortunate that he can't see both sides of the issue.  People stick so much to party lines and refuse to try and see things from other points of view - it's so frustrating.  I can only imagine how frustrated and angry you felt at reading his comment.  Try not to let him bother you - he is obviously narrow minded and arguing with him probably won't sway his opinion.
