Babies: 9 - 12 Months

Anyone's Pedi require vaccinations?

Our Pediatrician requires that your child be vaccinated or they will no longer see them as a patient.  The only one so far they do not have marked as mandatory is the Rotavirus vaccine.  We are vaccinating so I have no problem with that part, I was just wondering how flexible your Pedi is with delaying? Ours really pushes the regular schedule and I get intimidated by all of the information and shots. I would like to delay some of the 12 month shots and I am interested to know what they say!

Re: Anyone's Pedi require vaccinations?

  • We go to a family practice, if this makes any difference, but our doctor is very flexible with vaccination schedules. She has patients who vaccinate on schedule, on a delayed schedule, and some not at all. I'm fine with that. We don't want to give Lili the MMR at twelve months? Perfectly fine. Delay hepatitis B until she's older? That's fine as well.

FWIW, she specializes in pediatrics, obstetrics, women's health, and alternative medicine, and I feel fully confident in her abilities.

  • My practice will delay but they do require vaccinations for the child to remain a patient. When we went to a meet & greet, they went over it in great detail because they know it is a hot topic.

Their responsibility is to their patients, individually and as a whole. They also gave referrals to other practices that don't require them, for the parents that wanted to look elsewhere. I thought that was very honest and proactive of them.

I think if a practice wants to require them, that is their right as a private provider. I liked that they didn't just leave a bunch new parents hanging when they wanted to dig deeper.

  • Our Pedi does not "require" vaccinations however he strongly urges us to get them at the specified times.

He is pretty flexible though and is ok with us Having DD on a rolling/Delayed Schedule, we also discussed holding off on the MMR till she is 18 months and he is ok with that as well.

  • to be honest, i'm not entirely sure if they require or not because DH and I knew we were going to vaccinate DS. We did not give him the rotavirus though.

one of the pedis we interviewed stated off the bat that he requires his patients be vaccinated though

    Our practice does this too.

  • yep and i was kicked out of one because of it. they said if i didnt get aidan the MMR within 1 week of her 1st bday then i could not come back. had i known that (whether i wanted to vax or not) i would not haev chosen him. i would never go to ANY pedi that says things are mandatory for my child.
  • This is really interesting.  I don't think it's a requirement at our pedi, but perhaps I am wrong.  I did ask him about the swine flu vacc, and he said that he will not be giving it to his own kids (he feels as though it was rushed through production and he doesn't trust it yet), and he couldn't tell his patients to get something he refuses for his own kids.  So I don't think it's a requirement.  We've done every other vaccine, though.

  • No it's not mandatory. Our pedi very strongly advises parents to vaccinate but we do a slightly delayed schedule and have opted out of a few and he's had no problem with it.

He also is a big fan of spacing shots. He never does more than one shot per visit and no less than one month a part. Actually I had booked her MMR and another one within 4 weeks of each other and he called back to reschedule the other (I think chicken pox) because he felt they were too close.

  • I want to do this too at the 12 month visit- because I think more than 2 or 3 shots is cruel- but I have no idea what they will say to me.  When we met her for the first time I asked if she had any strong feelings one way or the other on anything and she said she didn't- whatever worked for our family.  So, I am hoping she will let me stagger them a little.
