Destiny? Genesis?

When did these names become popular? I decided to search by my state, and they popped up in the top 100 - so I decided to search by the good ol' Southern state I grew up in, and they're there too! Along with Neveah (ugh), Jazmin (the proper spelling is higher on the list, but this one's on there too...) and Aaliyah - which is actually a very nice name, I just wonder if people are all naming people after the dead singer. Oh, and Giselle. Which is also fine, but I worry people are taking parenting cues from Disney movies...

I knew about the Madison/Addison/Grace/Emma trend, but really? Genesis? I guess I'm now considering Deuteronomy for a boy and Culmination for a girl...

this is going to be a very generalized statement, so i hope i don't get flamed, but....

those names are often popular in african american communities, from my experience. they've been common over the last few years with people of different ethnicities. and so what? not everybody wants a super-anglo white-bread name like madison. if you don't like them, don't choose them.

Yep, most of those are terrible. Genesis makes me think of that girl on the Real World like forever ago. And Destiny makes me think of desitin. I didn't realize they were so popular either, although my coworker has a 2 yr old foster daughter named Destiny.

Ditto a pp- I know two Destinys and one Genesis and all are white. ?My MIL taught in a primarily African American school district and the names of most of her students made Destiny and Genesis seem very plain. ?(Like Nafeteria and ?Kashandralee).

Anyway: YUCK. ?I can't believe they're in the top 100.?

so? that doesn't "prove" anything. first of all, i'm talking about current trends, not when you were in school. and, i'm obviously not saying that every person with those names is non-white, so get real. for the record, i know a white girl named genesis myself (age 6). i'm just pointing out that SOME people on this board seem to forget that other cultures have different styles when it comes to naming their kids and then they automatically think 'yuck' when they hear names that may sound unusual within their own culture.

ethnocentricity sucks.

I've worked in a few districts that were primarily minorities as well, and while I did hear a lot of Nafeteria-esque names, there were more and more kids popping up with names like Destiny, Aaliyah, Precious, Armani, and even a girl named Praise. I think it's become kind of an alternative to the Khadisha, Laquita, etc type of names, so I'm not surprised to see it in the top 100.

I am a teacher and every year I always have a Genesis for the past 4 years..I have also had a Destiny and know many kids in my school named Destiny....

I can get on board with Laquisha and Taniqua much easier than Destiny and Genesis. One is an expression of cultural heritage, much like my liking Irish names; the others are names for porn stars, strippers, and future pop bands...oh wait, past pop bands.

No need to get touchy. I was "getting real"... in MY super white bread world I was raised in the only Destiny I knew was white. So I do not consider it to be an "ethnic" name. Obviously you've had a different experience. And sweetheart, I'm not that old. I still consider my high school years to be in the near past Wink

Actually, Genesis is becoming popular with the white evangelical Christian crowd....as is Trinity. Not sure it will the trend will go so far as Deuteronomy for a boy since the Bible is full of great guy names....but I do know a baby boy named Zion.

There was a white Genesis in the preschool (Christian preschool) I taught at. I always thought the name was really unusual.

I dont see anything wrong with Destiny or Genesis.

I just find it interesting that people can get so weirded out or disgusted by a name. Im assuming it is just an exaggeration. But the ugggh, eeek, yuck reactions to certain names really seems strange to me, especially if it is someone's real name already and not a name put out there for debate or opinion. I guess it is what it is.

Oh and aaliyah was popular long before the singer and i'm sure it will continue to be. It really is a pretty name.
