DH and I are looking at vintage family names for LO. We're German.
We've decided on Adelia Paige for a girl.. but for a boy we're torn. We both would love to name our son Casper, but I'm worried about taunting because of the old Casper cartoons. Question is- do you think kids today even know who Casper the Friendly ghost is?
Re: Another family name...
I think Casper the Ghost is pretty old school, so I doubt your child's classmates would make the connection. ?DS's initials are A.L.F. and I don't think his friends will know who ALF was.
I like it!?
(read it. you know you want to.)

I agree because I know who Casper is, but if it really bothers you, www.babyworld.com says the German spelling is Caspar or there are the variations Jasper, Gasper or even just Cass by itself or short for Cassian and Cassius. I like them all but the Casper spelling. Good Luck!
LOVE Adelia!
I wouldn't use Casper... wasn't there an updated movie of him... maybe 10 years ago? Even thought it was a long time ago, you never know if it will come back, I mean, Strawberry Shortcake and Care Bears are back! You just never know if someone will want to revive the character.
This will probably come out more negative that I mean, but it's because of my background with the name...
I am not a fan of the name. My SS is named after my DH and his BM calls him Casper/Caspy/Cas because she doesn't like his name. It drives me crazy. The name is probably not all that bad, but like I said, my background with it totally kills it for me.
And saying that, my SS is 5 and he totally knows who Casper the Ghost is. There are new cartoons out for Casper. My SS isn't called Caspy at school, but his classmates all know who he is. Even if the cartoon has been cancelled, 5 years won't make that big of a difference. Whether they will be negative connotations with the name is another story. As far as job experience... Hmmm... it's a tough call to say if it sounds too childish.
That's probably more info than you wanted, but if you love the name and have taken into consideration of all these things and still love it, then use it!?

I think Casper is really cute. And, to be honest, I had to think a second to remember I've heard the name from a cartoon. My kids have no idea who Casper the Friendly Ghost is and I have not seen it in syndicate recently.
BTW - Adelia Paige is a darling name too!
I think kids are kids and if they are hell bent on teasing your future son they will find something to tease.
My name is Megan and kids called me Mogon the Toboggon. Sigh!
If you and your H love Casper, go for it. He can shorten it to Cas as he gets older if he does't like the full name.
