Photography: advertising/marketing is EXPENSIVE!

DH is trying to get his photography business off the ground but man is the marketing expensive! To get on the 1st page of any kind of internet website search is so much money. I think we will have to bite the bullet and just fork over the cash.

  • have you looked into optimizing key words on the site to direct more people to it?  I don't know a ton on the subject, but I know that is what my company tells our franchisees to do with their individual websites.  We use a service that ranks what words people search for when getting to our site and make sure those are on the page.

  • How far into is he? Has he had clients? When I first started out I didn't put one penny into advertising. I just did free shoots for about the first 6-7 months. Then those people started talking, and I sllllllllowly got more clients, then those clients started talking etc etc. To this day I have not paid for any advertising. The only advertising I did was craigslist when I was shooting for free.
  • Ditto PP, I've two months into portfolio building and have way more people interested than I can even handle right now. Sure, my prices are only 50% of what I'll eventually charge, but still. It's all about word of mouth. Also, I get a ton of business from promo cards I leave at the counter of baby/kids boutiques.?

  • He started about 6 months ago and has done many free weddings/portrait shoots. I guess he's just having a hard time booking more jobs. He's on a couple websites but is on the 3rd or 4th page so it's kind of pointless. I dont know, I feel bad b/c I really think he's talented, has an awesome website/portfolio and a true love of photography so I dont know what to suggest.

  • I also do zero advertising and it's all word of mouth. ?I started doing shoots with family & friends for free and encouraged them to post the photos to facebook/myspace etc. and over the past two years it just keeps on rolling. ?
  • My sister started doing photography about 1 1/2 years ago. She has a blog and website, plus she has a page on facebook. I don't think she really did any advetising. She has business cards that she will give out to clients and people, but thats about it. She was pretty busy this summer though  - just this last weekend she had 1 wedding, 1 senior session, and a newborn session with twins. It might depend on your area your in. But I know she mainly gets alot of business from past clients who have passed her name on. My cousins are in highschool and they tell there friends, who tell their friends - and she has gotten alot of senior sessions.
