Baby Names

flowy, meaningful names

Hello, I'm new to these boards but was wondering if I could get some help!
We are expecting our second child and are so far unsure of the sex this early on. Big sister's first name is Elianna, and last name is Hughes. The meaning of the names we choose is very important to us. This is a very special pregnancy because the doctors told me I had unexplained infertility after DD was born, and that it wouldn't happen without IVF or something of the like. This baby was conceived only by the grace of God - no meds. We would like it to be something that we can point back to God (along the lines of thanks, gift of God, blessing, praise, rejoice, etc.). That being said, we have also chosen a lot of "flowy" names and need to choose middle names that sound nice with them, and also flow well into "Hughes".

Boys names we like are:
Elijah Daniel Hughes
Isaac Alexander Hughes
Isaiah David Hughes (not sure of middle name for this one - other options could be Benjamin, Gabriel, Zacharie, Samuel, Dominic... any other suggestions?)

As for girls names, I am really leaning towards Aaralyn, but DH still needs convincing. I can't decide on a middle name for it yet - so far I've thought of Aaralyn Renae, Aaralyn Rianne, Aaralyn Helene (although don't know if Helene and Hughes flow nicely), Aaralyn Jayne... are these too blah?
-Any other (more unique) ideas for middle names?
Other girls names we like include Addalyn, Annalie, Nora, Kaia and Adora. We did like Caelie too but it is soooo popular now in all of it's various forms, and I LOVE Emilia/Amelia but it means "work"... not quite the meaning we're going for!

I am open to hearing suggestions and would love your opinions. I don't want anything too hard to pronounce or too off the wall, but I don't want anything common either. Please feel free to speak your mind!

Re: flowy, meaningful names

  • how do you pronounce Aaralyn?

  • We'd pronounce it Air-uh-lynn.

  • I may be a little biased cuz DD's name is Amelia but it also means to strive or to excel.....

    I think I'm w/your DH on Aaralyn....but if I had to choose, I'd go w/Renae

  • To me, Aralyn is off the wall.  I kind of feel that way about all your girl names except Helen.  The boy names are nice though.

  • Where do you live? I don't know any Caelie's in any form.  Celia, which I think is the most common form, is only ranked 757 out of 1000 on the Social Security list.  It would have been ds's name if he were a girl.
  • I'm sorry, but Aaralyn Renae looks like it has too many letters somehow.

  • I love the name Elijah Daniel. My hubby doesn't like Elijah... boo.
  • Aaralyn is not my style. I think everyone will think she's saying "Carolyn."

    Here are some other names with the meanings you mentioned. I'm not sure if they are "flowy" but I tried!

    Abigail/Abby = Hebrew for Father's joy, Father rejoicing

    Gabriella = Hebrew for God is my strength

    Felicity = happiness, bliss

    Isabella/Isabel = variant of Elizabeth, Hebrew for God's promise

    Elisa/Elysia = God's promise

    Samantha = God heard

    Seraphina (Sera) = Angel (the highest ranking angels of God)

    Hannah = favored grace

  • All of your girls names sound like you're trying to create female characters in a romance novel rather than naming a baby girl.

  • I actually think Aaralyn is really pretty.  I like Aaralyn Jayne.  I also like pp's suggestion of Felicity, and I think it would be very appropriate.

    Of the boy names, I like Elijah Daniels.

    And fwiw, I don't know any Caelies, either, but I do know two baby boys named Isaiah.

  • To suggest another boy's name, Nathaniel means given by God or gift of God. Nathaniel has a nice flow to it with Hughes.?
  • I am a big fan of Isaiah, but I don't really like any of your girl choices.

    Here are some other ones that might fit your criterea:

    Odelia (I will praise the Lord)

    Nadia (Hope)

    Beatrice (Bringer of happiness)

    Clementine (Mercy)

    Gweneth (Fortunate, blessed)

    Alamea (Precious, whole)

    Hosanna (Praise)

    As far as a middle name, Joyce or Joy might be nice considering you want meaningful.

  • I think Elizabeth means "god's promise."

    Michael means "he who is like god," so you could do Mikayla.

  • Aralin (not sure of spelling, but very sure of pronunciation) is a powerful drug used to treat/ward off malaria--my husband took it in the Peace Corps and it gave him WILD dreams! I showed him your post--he nearly fell over laughing!!! But, hey, if you LOOOOVVVVEEE it...
