Toddlers: 24 Months+

Very very late teether ?

My DD is 18 1/2 months.  She only has 4 teeth (top and bottom 2) and no signs of any coming anytime soon.  She got those 4 between 13-14 months.  I thought I'd ask over here since you have older LO's.  Has anyone heard of a toddler getting teeth this late?  My pedi shrugs it off.  I've considered taking her to the dentist, but I don't want to overreact if she's still normal.

  • It's not only fine, but preferable.  :)  Less time out in the open to decay.  My good friend didn't even get one tooth till she was 2.  Perfectly fine.

My DD is just about a month older than yours, and she also only has 4 teeth.  My pedi is not worried about it either, so I'm trying not to worry.  It does look like she is cutting 2 more teeth at the top FINALLY, so at least I know she won't have 4 teeth forever. lol....

Do you have any issues with feeding your DD?  I still cut up her food really small and don't give her anything too tough to eat, and I'm worried I'm going to cause her to have food aversions by not introducing certain things.

I still cut things into bite size pieces.  She's gotten very good at chewing with her gums though.  One reason I still cut it is she's not very good at biting things off.  I'm also paranoid about her choking.  I still mush her steamed veggies because she won't eat them in chunks.

  • Olivia got her botton two teeth at 11 months.....then nothing until she was about 16 months.  Then she got four molars within a couple weeks.

    then......nothing.

She is now (at 20.5 months) just getting her top front teeth!  She has about 4 coming in right now.

We took her to the dentist at 15 months and they were not concerned.  they took x-rays of her top uppers just to make sure they were in there.

They come when they come.  don't worry!

  • This happened to my cousin.  He was 2.5 and my aunt took him to a pedi dentist.  He was xrayed and showed the teeth were there.  If he did not have them by his 3rd birthday, the dentist was going to send him to a surgeon and have his gums sliced to allow the teeth to come through. Luckily they came in.
