Q for teachers, or anyone else who went to HS in US

Do you think 10th graders should take their own notes from a PowerPoint presentation (as opposed to filling in "guided notes" - fill in the blanks - or a teacher-created outline)?

As you can probably guess, I'm a hs teacher getting ready for the school year. Different teachers in my school advocate different note-taking strategies. When I was in hs, I took my own notes and I think I learned more b/c of that.

However, many teachers still give students fill-in-the-blank notes at this age. What do you think?

  • I think they should take their own.  They need to learn how to filter out unneccessary info and write down what's important on their own.
  • they should take their own notes unless otherwise noted in their IEP

  • I had to do it both ways when I was in HS...and the truth be told I learned more from taking my own notes.  Then when it was time to test the teacher usually went over what we had to know on the test - and I would go back and highlight my notes and anything I didnt have notes on (say I missed a class or something) then I would write it down and know what to study from the book.

  • I'd give them the fill-in the blank ones for the first week's lesson. It will give them an idea on how to do notes properly/efficiently. I'd then move into having them take their own notes.

  • take their own.
  • Students need to be taught how to take notes.  I think some guidance in high school is really important.  That being said, they need to be 'let go' at some point and you should expect them to do it on their own.
  • From a Ppt? No. They should be able to do that on their own at this point.

From a lecture? Maybe. Especially if you don't write much on the board or have any kids with IEPs.

I have an interactive whiteboard and post all of the notes, ppts, etc on the internet at the end of every day for kids who are absent or want to double check their notes. But I still require them to take notes as we go to get it in their heads better.

I agree with this.  Using fill-in the blank ones for the first few weeks will show your students what you expect of their note-taking.  I think you will end up with better notes if you show your students good note-taking, versus just telling them what you want them to do.

  • A well-crafted graphic organizer can help students learn better study and note-taking habits. Ideally, 10th graders should be able to take notes independently, but in reality, some instruction on good note taking is going to fall on your shoulders. I use a mix of independent note taking and graphic organizers where I guide them through the notes.
  • I teach hs English and make them take their own notes. EXCEPT for grammar-- I don't want them to copy the examples with incorrect punctuation-- I made a handout.

  • If it were me, I'd do a review (length based on what you figure out they already know) on taking good notes. If you require them to take good notes, then you need to know that they are capable. I would hope that they would have learned by now, but unfortunately I would assume not all of them have. By the way, I am not thinking that I am telling you anything you don't already know here. :)

That being said, ultimately, they should be taking their own. However, guidance is still important where necessary. Having them do it incorrectly on their own won't do any good for their learning (duh ;))

  • Take their own.  That said, I like the idea of a "review lesson" and/or some guided practice.  Possibly even an occasional "fill in" note throughout the 1st half of the year as a "refresher".   But, primarily take their own!
  • 10th graders should be able to take their own notes. I teach the skill in 8th grade (though I still give guided notes when I do notes...which is not so often).

That said, you're going to have to teach note-taking. I'd do a few structured, then send them out on their own. Depending on the kids, I'd still offer my guided notes for a few weeks (many kids will opt out), then wean them off.

  • Take their own. My 8th graders start the year out copying from my powerpoints and adding what I say outloud - and towards the end of the year they are taking notes from my lectures with the outline posted on the board.
  • Take their own notes.  I teach 5th grade and we teach how to take notes (a lot!) granted, not in every format, but I would guess by 10th grade they should know how, or at least be able to be taught how.

  • They should take their own notes. It helps with learning the material faster and overall retention.

  • I definitely think they should take their own notes from a PP presentation.  I went to a school in a district where the administrators thought "dumbing it down" was a good idea, and college was a very rude awakening for me and I struggled the whole way through b/c I was totally unprepared.
