Pregnancy headaches

Did anyone else suffer from pregnancy headaches?  I'm getting them almost daily.  I have a prescription for Fioricet from my OB (which I'd prefer not to use) and a neurology appt scheduled for next week, but I'm wondering if anyone tried any alternative treatments - specifically, chiropractics or massage therapy? If you did, did either of them help you?

this. mine was (and still is) a lifesaver!

  • I had daily headahces and weekly migraines through my first trimester. It was horrible. I've suffered from migraines since 5th grade, so I was somewhat used to them, and have learned to just live with them. I'm not one to take meds. On my migraine days, I would take Tylenol, lay in a dark room with a ice pack and nap until it was gone. For headaches, I pretty much just dealt with it.

I should note, I've heard great things about chiropractors, but have always decided against it because it seems to be addicting, and I couldn't afford to take that on (co-pays and whatnot).

Were you a caffine persion pre-pregnancy? Did you give it up? I get bad caffine withdrawl headaches, so I *had* to have 1 or two diet dew's a day, and that often helped keep the headaches away.

    Good luck! It's NO FUN!

  • I had a cup of coffee a day pre-pg and I still have my one cup a day, so I don't think it's caffeine related.

I'm also a headache prone person, pg or not.  I miss my Aleve and Excedrin Migraine!  Tylenol doesn't do much for migraines, although they sometimes work for regular headaches.

  • My headaches were from dehydration. Make sure you're getting TONS of water!

This.  I got daily headaches when I was about as far along as you are.  I think they went away by ~18 or 20 weeks.  I found that drinking about 5 times more water than I thought I needed helped wonders. I kept two glasses by the bed and would drain them twice over night; I got up to pee a lot but it helped.  I avoided meds, but that was mostly just my preference.

  • I had them almost everyday when preggers but I suffered through them because I didn't like the idea of taking anything while preggers. Sometimes taking a nap or lowering the lighting worked.
  • I had headaches every day as well.  I saw a neurologist, and he said take Magnesium 250mg 2x a day as well as B2 200mg 2x day.  I have been only taking them once a day, and have not gotten a headache since.  This was a life saver for me.  No drugs, just vitamins.  Good luck.
  • I have a massage at least once a month for this reason!  It helps, just wish I could have one more often.
  • I've been suffering from preg migranes and they prescribed me the same.  However, I've given in to taking them when I can't hold out.  The doc pointed out if I'm in so much pain that I'm non-functioning and getting sick the stress is worse for the baby than the little bit of meds I'll take.  Also trying to drink a glass of coke when it starts seems to help.   Ice pack on the back of the neck with a neck rub after....  Try the little things to see if you can stop them before they get too bad.  Otherwise, don't beat yourself up if you need to take stronger measures.  I struggled with it...we are a green & organic home so if was a tough decision and I sympathize with you!
  • I get them too! Ugh.

The things that work for me are

    1. Getting a new, utilitarian, wide-band support bra.

    2. Tiger balm. It's a natural product with menthol and camphor oils and does WONDERS for sore anything! Wrists, neck, shoulders, back...the smell was the only thing that took away the nausea during the first trimester when I had awful "morning" sickness, too!

    3. Getting enough sleep. If I get even a half hour too little sleep I'll have a headache within a day or two.

Hope your head is doing better!
