Nbr- Chicago Food

We are going next weekend first time.  For anyone who has been there or lives there- what are some FOOD MUSTS- I'm looking for specifics!  We know we want deep dish- we just don't know- WHERE.  Any good junk food places?  We are cheating on our diets next weekend only.  I'm sooo excited!  TIA!

Re: Nbr- Chicago Food

  • I live about 90 miles out, but we often go to the Grand Luxe Cafe, it's right on Michigan Ave overlooking everything, and the food is SO good!

For pizza, I would suggest Uno's or Gino's East. I think ALL pizza is pretty good though, so it's not hard to please me! :)

We are also big fans of Flat Top Grille or Big Bowl - because you get to eat until you are ready to burst. :) All of those places are within walking distance of all the downtown shopping. Wear some comfy shoes!

    Have fun!

  • For pizza most people like to go to Gino's East if they are from OOT.  I like Lou Malnati's better though.  And for fast food/junk food I love Portillo's, it is a hamburger/beef/hot dog type place.  There are quite a few around the Chicago area and downtown.  If you are looking for a nice (read:expensive) dinner Gibson's Steakhouse is great and so is Smith and Wollensky's.  I've also heard great things about The Gage which serves pub food but I've never been there.  For a touristy type place Ed Debevick's is fun too, more for atmosphere not so much the food.  Now I am hungry!
  • You can do Gino's for pizza and if you have a light hearted sense of humor try to go to Ed DeBevic's just for the experience.
  • Al's Beef for some great beef, hot dogs, & fries, and Nancy's or Giordano's for pizza.  To me, Gino's and Malnati's are too tomato-y.
  • Lou Malnotti's!  Wildfire!  Shaw's Crabhouse!  Gianotti's!

I could have written this word for word. Lou's is definitely the best deep dish. Portillo's is a Chicago MUST. Gibson's is amazing and worth every penny.

I think all the ones in bold are chains. Nothing too special IMO.

  • Everytime we go to Chicago, we definitely go to Giordano's for pizza.  DH & I love that place. I've also been to Lou Malnati's, but I like Giordano's better.      If you're looking for a good steak place, Mike Ditka's or Harry Cary's are both good.

There is a restuarant named Harry Cary's???

Cubs -- This seals the deal, I am coming to Chi-town.

Lou's is the way to go!! It is beyond awesome. If you want something really special, you can head to one of Rick Bayliss's restaurants (mexican) he is on Top Chef Masters and has a bunch of different restaurants with different price points. Portillo's is a major yum too, but I'm not sure it is a *must*.

  • you could also check out the Diners Drive-Ins and Dives restaurant map - they are in Chicago all the time, so there may be some cool ones on there. Also, a news guy features certain restaurants and my MIL has been to some of them, she says they are always awesome, I think this is the link https://abclocal.go.com/wls/channel?section=resources/lifestyle_community/food/restaurants&id=5770526
  • You MUST go to Garrett's and get popcorn! Sooooo delicious. The mix is great, but I also like to get the caramel and cheddar separate and mix them on my own. Mmmmmmmmm! Check it out: www.garrettpopcorn.com
